Transmission Drain Plug Leak

The drain plug on my transmission is leaking. What can I do to fix this? I'm fairly certain the plug isn't stripped. This is a 99 5 spd with 4x4, 2 door, 2.7

 

I'm not familiar with the manual in a Tacoma, but such plugs also use washers/crush gaskets that are meant for one-time use (just like the oil drain plug).

I'd order a pack of them, pull the plug and just drain and fill while reinstalling the plug with said washer.

 

Where do I find said washers? I guarantee the missing Crusher washer is the issue.

The size is 18mm, but don't get the pack of fiber washers from AutoZone, they never seal properly.

Toyota sells this size crush washer in steel, aluminum, and copper (as seen in the kit linked above). I believe the transmission calls for aluminum washers -- BUT these are so cheap and it will be years before you need another one, there's really no need to guess or improvise or try to save money here. Galvanic corrosion sucks just as much as a perpetual fluid leak.

 

Also make sure you don't have an old washer stuck on the plug, two is NOT better than one.

When installing the crush washer for the 340E/F, you want to face the rounded side of the crush washer facing the pan.

So, which washer do I use?

 

Manual Transmission use Flat Copper.
Tcase use flat aluminum
Differentials use crush washers, smooth side in, slot out.

 

That listing says "cm" when it clearly should be "mm". It makes my skin crawl and makes me not particularly trust the seller.

This is a lot of heartache to avoid calling the dealer's parts desk.

 

The torque value for the automatic transmission drain pan bolt is 15 ft-lbs. At 27 ft-lbs, I'd imagine you'd either strip it or come very close to stripping it. That's a pretty small bolt.

 

What? Is this for the trany crush washer? That explains the drop of oil on the bolt. Where does it say to do that. Is it tribal knowledge or is it published somewhere?
Oh, well I get to do another drain and fill. Dang!
