I have a newer to me 2012 ddsb 4.0 4wd auto 66k miles. no lift or level that I know of. I’ve been chasing a hum/vibration.

I’ve been on YouTube and here the past few day’s trying to figure out my issue.
I was set on carrier bearing, but heard a clunk from left front on a speed bump. Crawled under the truck to inspect and can shake drive side axle a fair amount and hear a clunk every time I move it.

any help would be greatly appreciated

the slop you feel is normal in the left front CV..as far as the sound/vibration, does it go away when you drive in 4wd? thats the telltale sign its the front bearing.

^^^ What he said. The easiest way to diagnose the needle bearing is put it in 4hi. Go approximately 20-30 mph to where you can feel the vibration and switch it into 4hi. If the vibration goes away like flipping a switch, it's the needle bearing.

I would also look at the wheel bearing. It's not the perfect diagnosis but lift the front of the truck off of the ground and grab the tire at the 6 and 12 o clock and try and wiggle it. If there is any play, that's wheel bearing.

If you are unlucky like me, the wheel AND needle bearing went bad simultaneously (bone stock truck at the time) and we're driving me insane because the 4wd switch test helped quiet it down and also the turn test did the same thing.

there is a LOT of movement way more than passenger side. and i hear a clunk everytime i move it. roaring is getting pretty loud the last few days.

I tried this with the wheel on the ground and nothing. I will try and get it up on my dads lift and test more just dont want a complete failure of something on the highway driving to work

Oh i am unlucky. if its gonna go wrong it will find me

they are sloppy than the right, but does it go away in 4wd? Thats the first question you need to answer.

    Data point for you:

2015 4x4. Installed 2 inch lift. Got the typical needle bearing vibes and installed the ECGS bushing, vibes went away.

Vibes came back slightly different, drove me nuts. Spent months considering drive shaft alignment, shims, carrier bearing spacer kit. Finally bit the bullet, took the truck in, diagnosed as a bad wheel bearing. When they replaced it they found it had no seals, thus the corrosion. My vibes were worst from 35-45. Vibes might be the wrong description, more of a periodic heavy hum I could feel through the floorboard but not hear.

Just take the truck to a reputable local shop for a diagnosis so you know what you’re dealing with. Then you can decide if it’s a DIY situation or not.

the problem is my work schedule to get it in. Just trying at home right now.

I have the front end in the air right now and I’m spinning the front wheels. The drivers side seems to have a small click sound but no bearing moving that I can feel

passenger side has no click no movement in bearing but seems to drag and stop about 50% faster when I spin the wheels

Try cross posting in the appropriate regional forum and maybe you can find an experienced member to take a look. Good luck!

There’s a Midwest forum. You could also try the nearest state forum.
