It's whatever, you get ahead of lots of things by reading it and you patch the rest.

02 Tacoma, fixed with curse words.
I wonder how much of that thread is from people overloading their trucks with all kinds of useless overlander shit and then driving way too fast offroad. I have a fairly minimalistic build and packed out for the trail the truck is coming in right under 5000lbs. Even then I cracked my frame right by the gas tank. Hopefully that will all be fixed soon, for good!!

Glad I went 3/16" for the square tubing as it adds a shit ton of weight to the whole thing

I think speed does the most. That and amount of miles covered. Obviously a decent suspension setup that minimized vibration is important but at a certain speed you're gonna impart a lot of force really fast. We haven't had any weight based issues besides axle seals that I've noticed. The parts the crack aren't usually bearing huge loads. That said Im always the lightest in our group of folks and I'm pushing 4800lbs. When packing for a 2 week trip it's really hard to keep it even close to that.

It does make me think Toyota might have not designed the Tacoma for sustained rough-road/off-road use as much as the old Hiluxes and the J80 LC you have. Although they are more suited to daily driving than the older trucks.

It would be interesting to see how those two latter vehicles would hold up in the same conditions as the trucks in that thread. Idk, it might be about the same, but I had a theory Toyota figured most American buyers were gonna be in pavement most of the time.

We are also not using them as intended really. It's one thing to live on a dirt road and pull a water trailer or farm implement sometimes, or to go camping two or three times a year. It's another entirely to get off pavement and not see it again for a week.

She stands on her own, cause it's nice and square and perfectly centered on the plate

Going to round the corners off in a bit, but I think I'll hold out for a spare steel wheel to weld on as the base instead of killing my steel plate

Well for one thing the Tacoma equivelant in other countries had a fully boxed frame, so, yea we got the neutered version from that perspective. Diesel engine is a wash as I heard the ones they put in the hiluxes was a gutless turd.

I think the Tacoma frame might be thinner too or maybe lower-quality steel, but that's just conjecture on my part really.
Hm yea I'd ideally want a bare-bones HZJ80 for that kind of use.

But see the issue is I like to go fast, and the LC doesn't like to. Also camping out of an SUV is a hassle, I prefer the truck bed. The 1st Gen taco frame is certainly mediocre, you can thank Dana corp for that. 2nd and 3rd gen don't have nearly the same frame related issues we do.

On some tight tracks it does better lol, but for extended off-road grunt work I’d rather have a Cruiser.
