That used to be part of my job in the Accounts Receivable part of admin assistant at the Harbomaster's Office, searching owners by the vessel's Commercial Fisheries' #, Documentation #, state #, and herring spotters by FAA#. USCG runs the vessel documentation center, but the USCG courtesy safety exam team in could not search that database, so I'd send them a link every year before the commercial season. (Likely another reason some coasties hated becoming part of DHS...)

I was a boarding officer, the back and forth on comms for information while on an unfamiliar tanker or fv was unsettling. I cant speak for others, I hated em because we were underfunded as all hell (among other reasons)
