Toyota TRD OEM lift kit

You’ll find a lot of times while on the subject of wheels that offset is always tossed around and you’re less likely to hear what the width of the wheel is. I’m by no means an expert on this subject but these two details, width and offset go hand in hand, and that determines the backspacing. Here are some wheel specs I found when I was in the market.

TRD OR 16x7 +25 5”BS

TRD Sport 17x7.5 +30 5.5”BS

Sema 4Runner 17x7 +4 4.25”BS

Fuel Vector 17x8.5 +7 5”BS

 

265 is biggest you can go on stock wheels imo. I have zero issues whatsoever with my Sema Wheels and 275s

 

That’s what I’m considering is the TRD lift. How’s the drive on those? MPG? A lot of people are saying they are heavy and sluggish.
First truck owner if you can’t tell. I just want to be sure the set up I choose works out well.
I appreciate all of the responses and input.
265 seems like a safe bet, but I feel like I can tell the difference in pictures between those and 275 and 275 looks better.

 

275s on 17" wheels definitely hits my MPG and weight/feel compared to when it was stock. My stock sr5 wheels were 16" on 245/75/16s. I get maybe 250-270 miles of range per tank. Speedometer hasn't really changed, mayb3 1mph but it does feel like an actual truck. My one gripe about my stock tacoma when I got it was that it felt floaty compared to my Nissan titan that I had. Now it feels much more like a truck, I don't know how to describe it any better

 

275s is the widest you can put on a 7 inch wheel and 275 is the largest you can run before trimming is needed. I'm planning on a 275 but waiting for an SL or C rated Toyo Open Country which is coming soon so I hear.

Where's the trd lift crowd with 285's?

 

I imagine many ppl with trd lift kit either:

1. Don't wanna start cutting and chopping their tacoma up (cmc, weld, viper cut)
2. Don't wanna buy new ucas or wheels

And the ppl who do rock 285s with the kit either don't mind the rub or pretend that there is no rub

 

Then why do some people say a lift has nothing to do with whether or not you will rub?

Also, lots of common lifts are 2/1 like 5100/6112/Eibach/Fox and others.

 

I’ve never had an issue with rubbing on my trd lift with 285s/75/16 duratracs and the pro wheels. Got the lift installed December 2021, not a single complaint so far.

 

I may have worded my response poorly. You asked where is the TRD lift crowd specifically with 285s. I've never met a person with 285s that didn't have to do some additional modifications to their truck to fit them without rubbing issues. Anyone who tells you otherwise, in my opinion, is lying or In denial. Your wheel backspacing and offset has more to do with fitting 285s than the lift itself. You have to clear your ucas and make fully locked turns without hitting your cab mount or fendors

Went to my local dealership recently and a technician working there came out to talk to me about my setup in comparison to his. He had an identical setup to mine (bilstein 5100s, sema wheels) but he had 285s and said he rubbed constantly in reverse or at full lock or going up any kind of incline like driveways lol. I'm pretty sure he was ordering 275s after we finished talking.

I can't speak at all toward 16s, not sure what offset or backspacing those wheels have. Sometimes ppl make magic happen. But 285s typically do not fit most tacomas without extra work or $$$

 

Absolutely. It all had to do with offsets and backspacing. I’ve seen a few people with pro wheels and the trd lift clear 285s without rubbing, including myself. I have had the truck on multiple trails. Mud, snow, sand etc. I also am often full lock in reverse to get into my driveway. No rubbing.

 

Gotcha. It seems like the perfect offset is zero where it wont rub on the uca's or the fender lining/cab mount. Somewhere in the middle. That youtuber Chloe had the 17x8.5 0 offset method wheels and she said no rubbing.

I really want to avoid the cmc but wouldn't mind some cutting of the plastic. What if I wanted to go with -38 offset? Is that CMC guaranteed even with adjustable uca's?

 

Maybe because you have positive offset. It seems the wheels I like are either 0, -10, or -38 offset which gives me a higher chance of rubbing.

The main reason I asked my original question is because I was set on the 2/1 lift but wanted 285's. I didn't want to install and then regret not going higher due to rubbing issues.

 

If I remember right, OEM pro wheels are 0 offset

 

Oem pro wheels come in +10 for the old bead lock style or +13 for the 3 newer styles introduced with the 3rd gen pros

 

Curious what it looks like from the side… Could you send a pic that’s the exact set up I want to do to my truck but I’m debating between 265s and 275s

 

Is the driver side spring rate just a bit higher? Or longer length or both?

 

Can you post a side pic on a level surface? Just got my shocks trying to decide if I want to add a 1inch block or leave the rear stock and set the front at 1inch
