The dealer would charge $4,770 for option one, but I don't think the dealer planned on machining the head; I have officially committed to fixing my truck and keeping it at least another year, so I can wait until the used vehicle market improves, because I cannot afford a brand new Tacoma right now (unless it's an SR 2WD with no options. My dad is going to help cover the first $4,700ish, and I willing to to the remaining three grand.

This was the result of Pete pressure testing the system this past Monday...

This is just putting a used engine in the truck, and the only reason this is being considered is because the frame and numerous components were just replaced a year ago; I would not use the dealer for an engine replacement unless I could supply this engine and they could come close to what Pete is charging in labor and other parts. Note that the used engine is from a Tacoma one model year newer...

If the dealer can mill the cylinder head for $350-$500, on top of what they are charging, I will still go with the dealership based purely on the fact that they can take my truck on the 24th, have it ready to go before Halloween, and give me a free loaner while they work on it...

Are you skipping the Dealer altogether?

More than likely, but NOT because I'm worried about dishonesty. My dad and I are thinking that a newer engine would be better since the current engine is also burning oil.

If you are only keeping it until you can trade for another truck then l would keep the repair costs to the minimum.

This. Dropping 3/4 of the cost of the vehicle just to replace it a year later is hard to justify in my books. If I was you and opted for the expensive route, I'd drive that beeotch 'til the wheels fall off.

Who knows what the future will bring? With a year-newer engine that has a third of the miles on it, I might go with my original plan of buying a house before I replace the truck...

You can buy a helluva lot of oil for the price difference if your worried about it burning.

That could all go sideways too and something else costly on the truck could fail, then you have even more tied up into it.

My dad and I are talking to both Pete and the dealer on Monday. Both locations are within walking distance of each other. You make a very good point about the oil. My only concern would be the cost of getting the head milled through the dealership, because I am 99% sure that the head is warped.
