    Yaesu 2900
    Icom v8000 - Front facing speaker
    Kenwood 271a ($157 iirc) Front facing speaker (JDKeller now has this puppy! :))

    Also, you may consider a handheld and a mag mount antenna...

    It depends upon many things. Mostly antenna. They are all 5 watts. If you connect it to a mag mount antenna on your roof you will IMO be way ahead of a CB. If you wanted more range you could get a directional antenna. I keep two antenna and sometimes 3. 1 short for tough woods and 1 long for desert/no trees.

    I am not an expert but if you go to a HAM shop and talk with one of those guys and you can get a lot of range out of a 5 watt.

    But for this trip and to communicate amongst ourselves I should be fine with a handheld, right?

    the handheld should be good for a few miles, which is reasonable enough...

    since we will be out in the open, with the mobile radios and big antennas, you should be able to reach someone...

    on average, you will only be about 1/4 mile to 2 miles away from the nearest truck, so the radios should reach...

    Count me in. Bringing the wife, brother and brother-in-law as well. It'll be our and the trucks first time offroad! We are excited. Intalling ome lift with aal and lr uca's this weekend. All I need now is the amber lights and radio!
