I still do roofs and things others consider “nuts”, however as a former iron worker who crawled massive Mississippi river bridges like spider man…. I found myself about two stories up in a tree asking myself WTF? The question was simple - what would happen if I fall or injure myself? I decided I would just pay the man. I had a two year loss of inner ear balance and it has definitely made me leary of certain things. I can only do a few rounds of roller coasters before I need a equivalent break.

 

^I think this is called being more aware of your responsibilities to your family. I've gotten the same way. I've hung off the side of a tower 300 feet up in a harness secured only to a d ring on a beam clamp and now I've gotten where I don't want to climb the 15' up a ladder and onto my roof.

I had the best day with my old man yesterday. Cruised up to my camp to have a work day and sight in my new rifle. Left the phone in the truck, didnt matter I don't have signal either way. We got a good fire going and burned a ton of brush. We raked, blew, swept and generally tidyed up the area for gun season. One of those days of yard work where you're broke down at the end of the day but you feel good about what you got done.

That little Mossberg rifle shoots pretty dang well. 2" groups at 100 yards, I'll take that.

My little girl is full on walking now. It's awesome and terrifying at the same time.

 

Curious How old are you? Mid 30s?

 

No way I would go up 20 feet anymore.

I had an attic window that needed a quick repair on one of the in town properties, probably 35-40 feet up. I hired a local handyman to do the job and held the ladder for him. My heart was pounding and my shirt was soaked in sweat just holding the ladder.

 

Yeh I'm 34.

 

Funny how You sounded older at first by your posts to me but then you said you were millineal.

I don't mind ladder jacks, scaffolding or even being on the roof. It's the transition from the ladder to the roof, or a wobbly ladder, or being on the edge of the roof looking over that I don't like.

I go back and forth regarding heights.

I'll go onto any roof on campus (highest is about 100 feet) to put a camera up and have been on the catwalk in the Fargodome (160 feet above the floor) a few times but I HATE making the transfer from the ladder onto and off of my single story house.

You need hazard pay working at those heights, Fargo. And yes, walking is working.

 

Yeah, that's because a flat roof is a stable surface and the catwalk has railings.

 

I wired an American Rotary phase converter for a guy a few years back. Was a nice unit, well put together. Instead of wiring his stroke sander directly into the converter, I wired in a fused disconnect for extra protection. I also told him this was pretty much the worst spot for the converter, because it was a classified location because of the sawdust, but he did t really care, so there it sat. Later I added a 24” rotary head jointer on the converter as well. It won’t run both at the same time, but it runs either unit very well individually.

I think the belt is like 35’. That slide table under it is 8’ long I think.
