Lubricating Drive Line

Is there a way to turn the drive line by hand to get to the grease fittings? I tried taking it out of gear and that didn’t work, so I took the parking brake off (tires chocked of course) and that didn’t work either. It’s a pain at my age to keep crawling out from under the vehicle and move it a few inches to gain access to the grease fittings. This is a 2011 Tacoma 4x4.

 

The front driveshaft should turn freely if the truck is in 2wd but to turn the rear by hand you would need the rear wheels off the ground, trans in neutral, and park brake off.

 

Thank you. I got some of the some of the rear drive line done yesterday but had to quit because of my back and I ran out of grease. I’ll just move the truck for the rear. The front should be easy.

 

I have also left the truck in neutral and of course on flat ground , from under the truck u can move it with ur feet on the tires on ur back, just takes a few inches of travel to get to the zerks. Good luck and be careful.

Turning the tires will turn the driveshaft a whole lot easier than turning the driveshaft - which turn the tires.

 

Just greased mine... other than having to turn the front driveshaft the rest of the zerks were accessible after parking in the garage the night before. Was barely able get on the pita zerk up front... even harder getting the coupler off. Got this for next time. Hoping it works out better than having to use a needle attachment.

 

I just greased mine too and was lazy so skipped the one that wasn’t locking in place and not taking the grease. Didn’t feel like rolling the truck this time around. The rest of the grease was clean coming out so I think I was in the clear. So yea…I agree…it’s a pain when you’re lazy about moving the rear to gain access lol

 

I just might buy one of those some day -- sure looks handy. I've been getting by with a needle attachment for more years than most of you guys have been alive.
Nothing wrong with one more little thing to make life just a bit easier.

Just did my driveline today also!

 

I just picked up one of the locking grease nozzles as well. Getting a non locking one to stay on the zerk is a PITA.

 

I had to get one of these for that front zerk and even then I had to shave the round side of the end a bit more so that it would fit.

 

I hate Amazon so I went to locknlube.com company website. I got the extended adaptor and a can of Kroil.

 

I put mine up on 4 jack stands for this, every 3 oil change, rotate tires, grease driveline, check levels in all 3 cases. JMHO.

 

Just curious... what's your process for getting the truck up on the 4 jack stands?

 

Jack from the Front center support. Raises both front wheels off the ground. Throw 2 stands under front. I put the on the frame just behind the front wheels.

Jack from rear diff. Both tears come off ground. Throw 2 stands under the rear axle.

I will tell you I have rotated tires with just 2 jacks, it was hairy balancing, wife had to help a little. Did it once and that was it. I can't be the only one who tried this.? Lol.

 

that’s how I do mine. Jack up the rear and put a stand on each side of axle.
Then jack up front from center lift point.
Never any issues. I rotate tires every oil change/10k.
