Rear End Wobble/Shake - Desperate

Fixed — The added weight of adding a camper shell increased my already extreme CV angles. In case anyone has these symptoms (wobble feeling at speed, vibration, no steering or steering wheel shaking, etc.) Thank you all for your input and advice! I love the Tacoma community - Cheers!

Soooo, there are a million threads with this title and I’ve read them all. I’m hoping someone can help me pinpoint this

had my truck for a few years, and take great care of it. Never had many issues outside of the very normal and fixable Tacoma stuff. Recently put a camper shell on and started getting this really bad wobble from the rear end at 65mph+. Drives smooth otherwise. Just seemed to come up so randomly and aggressively. I have a hard time believing it has anything to do with the camper shell but that’s the only thing that changed really.

Replaced U-joints
Balanced drive shaft
Replaced carrier bearing (OEM)
Drive shaft angles are all perfect

Are your shocks shot?

 

Brand new Fox shocks :/

 

I would remove the shell to see if it goes away.

 

Wheel bearings good? Springs good?

 

seems to simple to be the issue but I pray you’re right! And I will definitely cry if that was the cause this whole time haha

 

wheel bearings seem good from all typical inspection. No noise, no play. Springs are brand new, but I’ll double check if the u bolts are loose. I checked not too long ago but I guess it’s possible.

 

Rotate rear tires to front and check wheels/tires off the possibility list

 

good idea. Will definitely try that tomorrow.

 

Do you have a lift, or are they stock ride height?
If you have a lift, what kind of shims (if any) did you use?

 

how old are your rear tires?

 

I have a lift. All Pro standard leaf pack with 3* shims. The driveline worked flawlessly up until recently. But I still had the driveshaft serviced to no relief

 

not very old. 2-3 years maybe. They look good still as I don’t drive that much.

 

I’m noticing it seems to be almost non existent when it’s cold out and then comes back as things heat up. Don’t know if related or in my crazy over analytic head now.

 

I think it may be trans mount related. They look old as crap, and I get some slop when shifting (auto - D to R etc.) and just overall feeling of not good lol

 

Could that cause shakes and vibration at highway speed?

 

If your driveshaft is also out of balance, I could see that being a thing. Wouldn’t be all of a sudden unless you bent the driveshaft or a balancing weight fell off

 

So I think I’ve got this sorted for the most part. Pretty sure it was just a combination of things. Driveshaft angles being just a hair off, slightly loose leaf center bolts and u bolts, and trans mount being worn. Rides pretty smooth now. Not 100% but a million times better than before.

Now to figure out the loose feeling in the floorboard lol.

curious, why would CV angle affect the rear to wobble/hop? Having similar issue it’s on and off on the highway.
