I think you are fine, chances are a "new" head is just going to be a refurbished unit that has been shaved anyway.

Well if it comes from a Toyota authorized supplier and carriers Thompson's 2-year warranty, then I really don't give a shit! If it goes a grand or so over the original price, but I still get my truck back before Halloween, then I am fine with that!

I learned that from the alternator fiasco; I bought a new rear bumper on Amazon after I smashed up the other one backing into a fence post at work back in like February 2020, and Pete installed it for mere pocket change. I could install a bumper, but Pete has a lift and my truck was going in for an oil change anyway. A bumper is one thing, but I absolutely refuse to get non-OEM vital engine parts!

Toyota takes cores back from the Dealer networks and refurbish the useable ones. Your head may not even be warped, no reason to dump more cash.

Yeah, but again. You won’t know until the head is off. If it needs replaced, do they have one in stock. And if not, how much time is it going to take to get one.

Not trying to squish your hopes bud.
I’m just trying to keep it honest man.
    You should ask them this.

If it is, then I'm going with a new head.

I am thinking of dropping the truck off early so they can tear it apart and find out if the head is warped. I moved the truck a few feet yesterday because it was blocking my mom's Nissan in, but I haven't actually driven the truck since Friday night; I do not plan on driving it again until I bring it to the dealer.

This plus it's not just the part, it's all the work and time to get to the thing in the first place. Even the alternator is simple to get to by comparison, though I agree with your ultimate move there.

If they can get to it sooner, that’s a good idea.

Just so you understand "new" can mean a head with hundreds of thousands of miles, it will have been rebuilt with new parts if needed. Just ask alot of questions before you make any rash decisions.

The problem is that the parts to replace the head gasket aren't arriving until Monday, so they wouldn't actually be able to start repairing the truck until Monday; I would like to have the engine opened up earlier so they compensate for this and order me a new cylinder head and I can still get my truck back before Halloween.

I'm pretty sure that Thompson would use a new head, though they try to sell me a remanufactured Denso alternator for $570 last December...

The Dealer will most likely get refurbished parts.

That’s a lot. But then again, I’d do my own alternator. So I wouldn’t have given the dealership a thought.

I didn't get an alternator from the dealership; I bought one from AutoZone for $280 ($220 after returning core). That was back in December 2021, like right after the frame was replaced; I had never replaced an alternator before and it happened on a weekend, so I paid my mechanically-inclined friend $50 to replace it. In August 2022, the alternator started to fail, but unlike the first one it didn't die in a matter of hours and I was able to replace it before it nuked my battery. My mechanic got me a remanufactured Denso alternator for like $250 and installed it for pennies on the dollar because he's cool like that, and I still haven't gotten around to returning the defective AutoZone unit. It's under warranty until after Thanksgiving, so I am going to get right on that.

I remember that. Lesson learned I hope.
Stay a way from parts store parts that can render your truck inoperable of they fail.
Which is basically any and all electrical components that are not OEM brand.

The stereo system is an electrical component and about as far from OEM as one can get. The only part that has actually failed is the backup camera, and Pete is replacing that next month...

Yep, the only way l would use part store parts like that was if l was flipping the vehicle, would never trust on my personal stuff.
