How To: Throttle body cleaning 2005+ V6

But it says on the can "for best results, do this every time you change your air filter" I just changed my filter about 2 months ago and did the throttle cleaning today. *sigh*

 

Technically you should never have to clean your MAF unless you run oiled filters like K&N. Certainly not every time you change your filter. Cleaning the TB however is a good thing to do.

Just did mine on my 4 banger, noticed a big improvement in performance and in MPG for the first two days. dont know if the 400 mile drive back got it that dirty or i got use to it that quick but now i dont notice the improvement as much.
I took out the two screws on top of the MFs disconnected it and spayed it then placed it in a paper towel to make sure it did not get dirty, while to took the rest apart and cleaned that. not to bad it is failry well protected just dont poke it or drop it.

 

I looked in my tech manual and it stated to replace the gasket so i did not take the throttle body off. is it a rubber/reusable gasket or more of a one time use paper one ??

 

Thanks for the info - took me all of 20 or so minutes. It was pretty nasty at 77K miles. Great job on the pics.

Has anyone cleaned their throttle body in a 1st gen?

 

Great Write Up! You would be amazed how dirty throttle bodies can get even if just using a stock air box. If you use an after market ram air intake or cold air you should do this every 25k miles or so. If not maybe at the 75k mile mark should be fine. In between to keep it somewhat clean, I like to not only inject seafoam right into the intake manifold but I'll also remove the air filter and spray it directly at the throttle body.

Don't under estimate the effect on gas mileage that a dirty throttle body can have, especially when it does not let your truck idle normally, the computer will compensate with more fuel.

 

Thanks to the creator of this walk-through. I'm a new Taco owner and found this extremely helpful for getting to the bottom of my troubles with low-end responsiveness and gurgling from an over-oiled K&N air filter!

Yes. You will notice a big difference in power gains when you clean it the first time. My truck was lagging at start off. I cleaned mine @ 80k miles & again at 130k. The truck felt invigorated like it had regained the lost power. The first cleaning it was caked with carbon. The 2nd cleaning, it wasn't as bad.

The pictures & write up I did was from the 2nd cleaning.

The can says that so they can sell more product. I will do mine again, when my truck seems sluggish.

Yeah, great effort on that. I was going to say, you don't even need Photoshop (and its $600 license, ahem...). Paint.NET is free, and provides a really nifty arrow tool. Maybe I'll provide a quick screenshotted tour of how to do that in the Computers section and link it here.

 

I use paint.net occasionally. I can do basic stuff. Still learning. It was quicker to use the box lid arrows.

 

I just done this on my 06 Taco and boy was it due for a cleaning. I expected it to be dirty but the black gunk I cleaned off the throttle body was just like tar. Also, inside the black part it connects to was coated in the black gunk. I don't think it has been done for the lifetime of this truck. Anyhow, just a thanks for this write-up. Well Appreciated.

 

You are welcome. You should notice a difference on power right away. I know I did when I went for a test drive after cleaning mine.

 

HI Sean nice demo on the clean up very clear. now my question before i go to the Dealer
i have 2009 TACO 4x4 V6 48000 miles 90% TPK Hwy driving, 3 weeks ago i noticed as i am driving i hear a humming from the engine, not engine sound , but like some thing spining freely in the background , i noticed today That when i am cruising ,and i let off the gas pedal the Tachometer does not drop instantly, should it??? could this be dirt and GUM issue in the Air flow sensor, would a cleaning like you described here help at this point , also i use regular Gas from a no brand gas station in the Truck. any suggestion is helpful Thanx
