A quick question so I don’t have to drop my skid plate for a better view - is the trans cooler/radiator on 2022 models sandwiched in between the ac condensor and engine radiator?

Or is it the metal lines with heat fins running in front of the radiator?

I meant to look when I was doing an oil change but it slipped my mind and I’m having a hard time finding photos online that just aren’t people taking pictures of their aftermarkets.

Trans coolers are no longer standard equipment. Mid-2020 model year they went away

just before I read your post I found the answer…I think….

I guess it’s integrated into the radiator now - I saw lines running up around there that said ATF on them but couldn’t see where they led to

Yes - it is standard to be in the radiator tank. But, there was an external cooler that was included with the towing package, which was deleted in mid 2020 as mentioned post #2

For some, if they can't see it it does not exist.
Toyota took an external cooler and integrated it into the radiator. It still cools, it still works, you can still tow.

The information is readily available on here and on google with pics, parts diagrams, text descriptions. This is why we shouldn’t post about things we’re unfamiliar with.

I haven’t pinned the thermostat and haven’t added an external cooler but while pulling my light boat (~1500 pounds) up a hill I’ve seen temps around 180.

Is the danger zone for atf fluid around the 230 range?

What was the reason, did they say? My first instinct says it was cost savings because I highly doubt a car manufacturer would make an improvement if it wasn’t needed.

Could've been cost, could've been supply chain issues early in the pandemic. I wasn't too pleased to find it had been deleted after getting my truck but what's one more mod lol. It really comes down to 'will the transmission survive to the 60k miles warranty?', and if the engineers says it will then it's something the truck can go without.

I would say that 180 degrees is ideal. Mine was at 220 without a trailer on the mountain roads. Not sure haw much faith I have in these apps that read the temps, but in the service work I do - I'm a firm believer in cooling down transmissions.

more than likely a cost cutting issue. I’m unsure what set up a Colorado / ranger / whatever the gmc Colorado is called but if even one of them went to integrated cooling using the radiator then everybody will do it.

We make changes to our products, so why wouldn't Toyota?
For example, in a certain application, we found that we didn't need an orifice or control spring in the main control so we deleted it from the BOM. Did we do it to save money? Nope. We did it because the result was the same either way, so less parts.
I dare say that the savings on their oil cooler was not not even enough to make a rounding error.

Could be. Part of my job is shaving pennies from BOM’s. If I could drop something that cost dollars I’d be a hero.

Most companies follow the same suit. Unless the cooler works better where it is now I honesty don’t see Toyota doing it unless they saved money.

A quick look that part from Toyota costs 511.00. I have no clue what cost is but let’s say it’s 50 bucks? Let’s go with 5 bucks and give them a 100x markup.

This was quick math so it might be wrong.

Total Tacomas sold 2020-2022 (YTD) was around 644k. Let’s say 50% would have had a trans cooler? At 5 bucks a part that’s 1.6M savings. Or roughly 500k a year. I’m pretty sure Toyota would make a change for money like that. Or they could have realized they didn’t need an external cooler, dropped it for BOM simplicity, and the savings were a bonus.
