You can use strapping on the back to make it sturdy.

Those of you that used the Rubio Monocoat before, is it worth it to use the wood wash? Also, I saw reviews that said the lids don't go back on the cans, any of ya'll have that issue?

If you use dowels at where it separate at the top and little 90° brakets you should be fine. Just dont glue the dowels.

    Or cam locks,

This is a rug loom I made for my Betty. Its made of ash and can be taken apart for storage. It uses old t shirts for the weaving material.

She wants a desk like mine but with an open space above that spans the length of the desk and 2 shelves above the sight lines.

For now I got the wood to build the bottom.

Not sure where you're sourcing your lumber, but you might get a better deal going through a lumber mill. I found this one in MD, not sure exactly where you're located but it may be worth it to buy from the source instead of buying from a big box store. I use to get all my lumber from either HD or Lowes before I found an exotic dealer, well worth it.

We cut down a 40 year-old holly tree at work and the landscapers let me take the two largest logs out of it.

What's the best way to dry this out before I start breaking the logs down?

Yup, mill it into boards or it will never dry in log form, seal the ends with anchor seal, sticker the boards and stack, wrap a couple of ratchet straps around the stack to help keep the boards flat as they dry. Tighten the straps every once in a while. Air drying takes about a year per inch of thickness to dry. Cover the top of the stack to keep water off but leave the sides open. If you can place the stack in a shed, barn or garage even better.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Rule of thumb for air drying - 1 year of dry time per inch of thickness.

I'd love to get wood not from a big box store. Never done it, so not sure how to go about it. The one you found is about 2 hours southeast on the other side of DC traffic. If it weren't for the highways between here and there, I might even consider the drive from time to time.
