Steering wheel radio controls are odd, or maybe I'm dumb. Not sure.

So on the left side of the steering wheel, where the up/down and volume buttons are, up/down controls do not seem consistent and I wanted to make sure I'm not stupid or if this is normal.

When listening to the radio and I press the down button it will click to the next preset. So if I'm listening to preset 2, it will go to 3. Ok. If I press up, it will go from 2 to 1. Ok.

What throws me off is if I'm listening to music from my phone, via bluetooth and I press the up button it goes to the next track. So from say 2 to 3 and if I press the down button it goes back, say 2 to 1. This is my mind makes more sense, but the fact that the controls for radio/SXM and bluetooth are on consistent baffles me and throws me off depending on what I'm listening to.

Am I the stupid one or are the way its setup weird.

It mimics how the screen displays. So if there's a list of radio presets, pressing up moves the imaginary cursor up the list.

Conversely, there's no list on bluetooth, therefore the up button skips to the next track.

It took my brain some time to get used to the up-down/left-right reversal. Occasionally, I still volume up, when I'm trying to skip to the next track.

I'm a weird kind of dyslexic. It took me all of 30 seconds to acclimate to the radio controls, but whenever I want to check my tire pressure I wind up cranking the volume. :cookiemonster:

I actually dislike those controls so much I reach over and used the damned knobs. To me the up and down should work the volume not change the station and vice versa. Had the truck for over 2 years and still hate that feature of it.

See that would make sense too. UP/Down for volume and Left/Right for previous and next.

This may confuse, or piss you off: In the Toyota Highlander, that's how they function. Up/Down is for volume and left/right is for next track or previous track. Go check it out.

Steering wheel controls matches what’s happening on the head unit. Really don’t understand the issue here.

This is an age old discussion, brought up many times here. I too dont like them, however, when I took apart the wheel to add some color matched trim, i dont think its possible to change them. I'm sure some of the electronic guru's could do it, and think i'm stupid, but IMO, the juice isnt worth the squeeze.

I hated the stock layout. Don’t care about what matches the radio, it was unnatural for volume to be left and right and song skipping to be up and down. I installed an aftermarket radio and a Maestro RR and during the programming of the RR steering control buttons, flipped the functions. Much happier with that setup.

In stock form you’re stuck with it the way it is. And yes, what you’re experiencing is normal.

Better than my sister's raptor. you'd press the volume control and it'd change her cruise control speed... that was a fun one.

Thanks to the op for asking. I searched around here for info about that and couldn’t turn it into a question that made sense. Counterintuitive and sucks ass in my opinion.
