Like I said, I'm not sure where you abide but if you google 'Hardwood supply near me', that should narrow down your choices. I see that Home Depot is starting to get into the slab and hardwood sales but most of it is going to come with that premium markup and possibly special order. You'll get your best deals straight from a lumber mill. You can also find that Rockler sells wood online along with their sister site WoodCraft but I personally like the ability to sift through the wood selection and not just let someone else select for me, but that may be just me. Additionally, you might be able to poke around the facebook marketplace or craigslist about people trying to off-load their old lumber. With regards to Facebook, look for people that are selling their chainsaw mill or bandsaw mill services as they might have wood for sale that they've stickered and slabbed. It's tough to find a good local hardwood supplier but once you do, you wont want to shop those big box stores again.

Woodcraft has nice stuff at their stores but also a nice price. Unfortunately some stuff is getting harder to find so that pushes the prices up also.

But yes local CL or FB marketplace sometimes has deals. @tomwilson74 seems to find good deals

I was in Woodcraft the other day looking at goncalo alves for a box I want to make. It's nice to have a good variety of wood available, but as you say, it's pricey. A while back they had a few pieces of Koa. I'm kicking myself for not getting it as it's very hard to find.

I love picking through their (and Rockler's) scrap piece shelf of off-cuts. Since I make small things, I can cut them up and glue them into patterns that look wicked. Purpleheart and curly maple look fantastic together.

I think part of it is the area of southern West Virginia I live in. Generally, people just don’t have the money to pay the average board foot price people are asking in other areas. The best deal I found was the walnut for $1 a board foot in Ceres, VA. I went down there 12 times, it’s all gone now. I spent over $1000 there.

I wish my Husqvarna 460 Rancher had enough balls to do that. I had an old beetle kill oak fall behind my property that's just waiting to be slabbed. I've sawn it down to manageable sized logs but I'd like to get slabs out of it if possible.

    Never used wood wash.
Take a small nail and drive three small holes in the U shaped lid sealing channel. Then the stuff has somewhere to go.

But yes the lids arr fiddly

    Mutterspaw lumber is great.
They ship on a pallet if you have a forklift at work. You gotta buy 100bf to get a good deal though.

I got tiger heart curly maple, and also ordered ambrosia maple with curl.

If you are near TN let me know. There is a lumber mill in Baxter that auctions off overruns. Thats where I got 14" wide sassafras, heavy heavy curly maple, and lots of black walnut.

Thank you. I brought the grain up with some water and resanded with 320, and I think that will be enough. I have some tack cloth that I'll use to get all the sawdust off. I kind of figured the wood wash was a gimmick.

As far as the lids go, I was planning on getting some large, plastic syringes and mixing the Monocoat in a throw away container so I didn't have to deal with product in the sealing channel. The review I saw said the lids basically don't go back on at all.
