you should be looking around for the Kentucky Coffee tree - the wood can be this wicked cool shade of orange. Used to be the state tree there so I don't know if there's any limitations on them or not.. there's a bunch of them here in Iowa.

Doesn't look like it's the same tree as an Osage Orange. Wikipedia says it's a "rare tree".

Odd. I was able to get my lids back on, then again, I drew the product out with syringes since I needed such a small amount for my sample boards.

I've fallen down the Youtube epoxy resin project rabbit hole, and I'm extremely scared I'm going to buy and waste alot of it now :anonymous: I'd love to try something super small, like a set of 4-6 coasters with a clear glass like finish, before trying an entire table/desk. I need a garage and way more tools.. And finances I suppose lol

What's the general consensus on stuff like Home Depot "hobby boards"? I don't have a planer, so it seems stupid simple to just buy a small stick of 1/4 or 1/2" x 4" x 36" type wood and cut some simple squares out of it. Anything to be weary of? I really have little to no experience with different types of woods; anything I've ever built has been pine and cheap lol.

Home Depot may have some of those hardwood hobby boards. They are a bit pricey for the size of wood but they are also cheaper than buying a larger size board and ripping it down into smaller pieces. I think if you are just wanting to test stuff out, this would probably be your best bet.

Kinda my thoughts as well. A small stick of Oak is only like $7, and that'd yield at least 8 3.5"x3.5" coasters. Add in some epoxy and they turn into really expensive coasters, but I guess there's only one way to learn :anonymous:

I find the quality of the New Zealand pine at Lowes is far superior to Home Depot, as is the oak. The poplar is about the same.

I assume that helps seal the wood/alleviate bubbles? I've been watching way too much burnt wood projects and noticed it was really important to seal the project before hitting it with epoxy. Also starting to think I should buy a stick of cedar fence post and make a shit ton of coasters to experiment with/turn into Christmas gifts/keep the ones I like most lol. I can make plenty of different thicknesses that way, and then I can get my enjoyment out of burning some wood and ruining it, and not be out any money lol.

Definitely is compared to yellow pine or something, but I think I've got a source for it for cheap(er).

Yes sir. Thats what I do, but the lid has product and it wants to run down into channel.

Also consider after 320, sand back down to 220 at the highest.

It needs access to the grain pores to work. It fills them solid.

I've bought some poplar and walnut from them. I didn't check the first walnut board I bought to see if it was bowed (it was), so damn. Grabbed a level from the tool section after that to check. Also used the metal shelving as a sort of straight edge.

I'm building a greenhouse and have a lot of scrap redwood. I don't see much done with redwood in the woodworking hobby world, but it does gave nice coloring. I'll try some different things...
