This woman threw a passive-aggressive tantrum because the overhead bins were full and she had to walk her bag back to the front of the plane and gate-check it. She kept making under-her-breath comments as the flight attendants walked by. After we pushed away from the gate and got the safety briefing, she said something along the lines of "I hope you fall and break your neck" as an attendant walked by... which was enough to get the captain to pull back up to a different gate to have her removed.

She left quietly, but had been absolutely insufferable up until the moment she realized she was getting thrown off. She said to the guy across the aisle from her (coincidentally, one of the beer-drinkers from the terminal) "I'm hungry what are you eating can I have some?" and kept trying to make the guy next to her watch Bob's Burgers instead of football (can't say I disagree with that, but I wouldn't go so far as changing the channel on someone else's screen).

I wonder if she was on something. I can't imagine how a person would be so shamelessly and/or obliviously awful in their right mind.

The icing on the cake is that bag that she threw a tantrum over gate-checking probably went to Denver while she was in time-out in Chicago.

Oof. Yeah sounds like she was either on something or maybe had a condition. I don't get why people get so upset about having to gate check a bag, it's a free checked bag

I'm too important to wait an extra 15 minutes to get my bag from the carousel

To be minimally fair for her, the crew didn't do a great job of handling the full overheads. A bunch of people ended up stuck in the aisle with nowhere to put their bags. They had to carry them to the rear galley, get tags, then carry them back to the front of the plane once the aisle cleared, and the communication about what was happening and why was spotty.

That said... I'm happy to gate-check a bag if I can pick it up in the ramp on my way off the plane. I don't want to gate-check if it means a visit to baggage claim. I want out of the airport as fast as possible.

On this trip, United even went so far as to offer me a free "upgrade" from a carry on to a checked bag while I was checking in on the app--meaning I would have checked the at the departures counter prior to going through security. That's not an upgrade as far as I'm concerned. That's me doing more work to allow the airline to keep overstuffing planes.

Usually with gate check you end up getting it outside the plane where they keep the strollers and wheelchairs and stuff, at least I think. I've never been made to gate check a regular bag, but when we gate check our stroller that's how it works

normally I'm not so opposed to doing baggage claim but it really depends on the airport. Some of them put the baggage claim like a mile away from where you depart the plane.

I love Burbank Airport out here because you get to exit from the front and back of the planes, right out onto the tarmac. Small airport so baggage claim in just a short walk from there.

I'm not sure exactly what it depends on, but I've seen both ramp-claim and baggage-claim after gate checking. Something to pay attention to when they're asking for volunteers to gate-check.

Flying into small airports is fun. After landing in Abilene tx once the pilot got on the speaker and said “sure enough folks we’ve got a special treat today, we get to use the jetway!”

    *30 seconds of taxiing passes*

“Sorry folks , spoke too soon, it’s already taken so we’ll have to use the stairs”

    He sounded a little sad

Yeah that's how the airport was in Redmond, OR too when we flew into there. Or maybe I'm thinking of Medford....

Smallest commercial airport I think I've been to was the Columbia, MO one. Was out in the middle of a cornfield it seemed like, just 1 or 2 tiny terminals. Of course that was when their security did a full on CSI investigation of our baby formula that took over a half an hour and we nearly missed our flight.

I flew out of "Chicago-Rockford International Airport" once.

It's actually 90 miles away from Chicago, and only has a few flights a week to vacation destinations. It's "international" because they fly to Cancun.

When I went through (sometime pre-TSA, I think 2000) the terminal had free parking, four gates, and a hot dog stand.

The good ol' days when I could tour the cockpit mid-flight and bring my Swiss army knife to whittle a shiv to pass the time

funny enough I've accidentally brought a pocket knife on board more than once post-911. But I've lost more knives to TSA than that lol.

I have lost many knives to TSA. I always forget to leave them at home, I literally always have a pocket knife.

Everyone knows all the Missouri drug kingpins operate out of Columbia. What a hotbed of criminal activity!

I'm surprised Missouri hasn't just given up entirely along with Mississippi. Like why even bother anymore, last place in absolutely everything.

Ditto. Including the custom engraved Benchmade my wife got me and a nice Kershaw a friend gave me more recently. I've decided pocket knives are like sunglasses for me, I can't get really nice ones because no matter what they'll get lost eventually.

They busted out this full on chemical reaction kit and kept dipping different sticks into the formula to test it, probably checking for individual substances. Then they would have to phone to their HQ or something and report the results and get the 'all good' from them each time. It was so fucking tedious and I was near losing my mind because our plane was about to leave.
Like jesus christ, you can see my wife and 1 year old daughter right here, they aren't some facade I'm using to sneak drugs past you wtf.
