Have you contacted anyone from KDMax? I haven't had mine tuned yet but have had no problems communicating with someone who does the tunes in my area. I have a 2020 2.7, not sure if they can do your 2021 yet but you can ask

The 9 drive works well for what it is but that just fixes the dead feeling pedal, a tune will fix the shifting which is the other half of the issue. Its so quick to downshift especially at highway speeds up down up down up down, mix that it holds the shift after a slight grade what seems like forever even if you're off the throttle. Its a pain to manually shift it up a gear while going down hill, plus gear lock would be a great feature to have. The slightest grade it downshifts from 6 to 4th and screams when it can comfortably be in 5th. Ive emailed vf as well and have received a similar response we are waiting for or are ordering ecu's. I have a 21 which is not available yet this truck, as much as the 9 drive did improve the driving i see the tune doing as much if not more. I think we as a group need to keep reaching out and pushing the button to make it available for all 3rd gen years

The 9-Drive has "Sport" and "Racing" modes that hold onto the gears longer before shifting. Try using those.

Toyota agressively retards the electronic throttle response on these so they can meet emission requirements by testing them at slowest speeds as possible.

A "tune" likely will not give it much more power if any at all. ECU may be able to mix in more fuel if it can get more air, but that's about it.

It's not as modern as the 3.5 V6...the 2.7 i4 dates all the way back to 1994, Iron block and all.

It has variable valve timing, but no direct fuel injection, port injection of any kind and is hardwired for Atkinson Cycle.

Agree i do not think it will add any power maybe smooth out the curve but i do not expect any power increase. Fixing the erratic shifting and being able to hold a gear more will make it a night and day difference. The 9 drive is the same as a pedal commander it does nothing for shifts it just adjusts foot to throttle input. I live in NC its a little hilly the slightest grade the trans is 6-5-4-5-4-5-4-5-4 especially with cruise on its terrible. A little is the lack of power at highway speeds but more is the funky tuning toyota does. Ive driven the 3.5 and its the same on the highway out of the box not as bad but still an issue. I see a tune making a big difference on mostly on highway and gear hang. We all got the 2.7 for the proven reliability we know it wont win a race but can win the marathon. Its a 4000+lb 4wd truck with 160 horse take it for what it is i think its fine in the power department just needs to be able to hold the gear a little longer with throttle input without dropping it to redline when its not needed.

I agree that power isn't the problem; it's transmission mapping.

Question is if you want to wait 4 weeks without a working truck, pay $450 to fix it or use a $40 device that solves 90% of the inherent issues.

I'm content with the $40 device.

I’m sure they will have a tune for your version of ecu in the near future, but yeah it does suck having to wait

Pulling the right side of my dash to yank out the ecu is out of the question for me, the money for the tune i would not mind. The 9 drive is a must until vf gets an update for my year. The more people in this thread and reach out to vf asking for updates the quicker it will happen

Overland Tailor Tuning is pleased to announce it now offers calibration support for the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020 Automatic transmission 2.7L Tacoma's.

We've taken the same approach and philosophy to the 2.7L as we have with our popular 3.5L tune and brought it to the 4cyl market. Our emphasis is aimed at improving the low end output of the engine at normal to moderate throttle angles, even on 87 octane fuel. We've completely reprofiled the shift scheduling to optimize it for the output of this engine for trucks that are stock to expedition weight. We've also remapped the throttle settings to bring this little engine to life and put your right foot in charge of the engine giving the end user something similar to stock to something even more responsive than a Pedal Commander.

Be sure to contact your local tuning resource to get scheduled.

If you're in the Salt Lake City or Birmingham AL area, please contact me via PM for a free dyno tune (no expense to you).

Probably, once when people start crashing them and they can source an intact ECU from the junkyard.

Shouldn’t take long, there’s some real dumbasses on the road these days. I’d attempt to get my hands on one and send it if it’s any help. Anyone I should contact ?
