There are a couple places around here that sell slabs of various wood species, including redwood, and the local Woodcraft also sells big pieces. I'll make a box to start and see what it looks like.

I'm thinking I'll grab a stick of poplar and oak to experiment with. After perfecting, I'll hopefully go back for some walnut.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.

That's BS. My Lowes and HD only have red oak, poplar, assortments of pine and cedar (I know that's a pine). The Lowes 30 miles from here does have ambrosia maple.

DITTO! The only walnut I’ve seen at HD came in a bag to snack on at checkout.

It's more to seal the grain of the wood to prevent the color of the epoxy from bleeding into the edges. Helps keep crisp lines.

Just make sure you're wearing a dust mask when working with the exotic woods (should wear one anyways) Some people can be allergic to things like Padauk and Purpleheart as they come from Africa.

Has anyone used a small tabletop bandsaw to cut epoxy pours? If so, what type blade/TPI or will any wood blade be ok if I cut slow?

yeah, learned the hard way that I react to cedar (and any naturally rot resistant species). Had to go full on respirator and shave my beard to finish all the sanding and shaping on the canoe.
