New recall for 22-23 Tacoma 22TA09

Has anyone done the repair where they had to reinforce the welds? Im thinking of putting this off until my next service in December.

 

I'm curious which degenerate is "qualified" to inspect welds at a car dealership. How were they trained and what are the criteria they are looking at to determine whether or not an actual fix needs to be applied? I'll let them inspect it and clear it if that's all it is. Not sure how I feel about letting a third party weld on my truck without some sort of diminished value compensation.

 

Wondering the same questions - I got my recall via snail mail this week. No need for the anchors - perhaps let it go as I have no intention of getting rid of the truck.

 

Isn’t ignoring a safety recall a problem if you ever decide to trade the truck in?
The recall offer cant expire right? Can you put it off and just get it done down the road if you decide to trade in.

We had no seatbelts back in the day. Metal dash boards too. We’re tougher now because of it. You could always put your booger eater’s bike helmet on it while it rides in the car just in case. Bubble wrap comes to mind…

 

Not if you have never been informed about the recall. There must be plenty of vehicles traded in, with out the recall being completed

 

Makes no difference on a trade-in. Dealers rarely ever run the VIN on a trade-in, and even if they did; recalls are repaired free of charge so they'd just sublet it to the proper dealership (assuming different brand) and have it handled...unless you're an AutoNation dealership - those bastards let the buyer figure it out.

That being said? Depending on your local DMV rules, it may affect your ability to renew your registration or transfer a title on a private party sale.

From experience: 1996-ish, I'd bought a used Chevy pickup from a non-Chevy dealership, and DMV refused to send me my new plates & reg until I had an open recall performed. Didn't know it had an open recall when I bought it, this was before the time of CarFax and easily accessible online recall/TSB searching (I was still rocking a 486 with a 56k modem!). I had called DMV because 90 days since I bought the truck had lapsed and I hadn't received my plates yet, and that's when I was notified about the open recall. Recall was for the catalytic converter.

Anyway, don't know if those rules still apply. But DMV used to do shady crap like that to force owners to get recalls handled.

Made an “appointment” at a local dealer just to check the welds out before deciding on doing the recall.

they said they need the truck for basically the whole day to do that.

i think I’ll sit this one out until I decide to trade the truck in.

 

I'm curious to see if my '22 will need a fix or not and if I trust the Toyota techs to properly diagnose a weld.

FYI, the rear car seat anchor keeps forward-facing car seats from flipping forward and crushing the child in a bad rear-end accident. My Tacoma is not our primary family car, but I am the parent of several small children and would prefer they were safe when I take them out in it.

 

Not sure if this qualifies as information which moves the needle on this issue or not, but my 2022 Tacoma DCSB was produced on 05-Sep-2022 and is enroute from Guanajuato; I just checked my Toyota App and it states my truck is not subject to any current recalls.

The fairly obvious questions popping up in my mind are:

1. Has the issue been addressed at the factory?
2. If the issue has in fact been remediated at the factory, then why does the recall state 2023 models are included?
3. Was my truck already inspected and deemed not impacted or inspected and corrected?
4. Do newly built trucks have some sort of a latency before they are included in a recall campaign; say, they will not be included until sold and registered?

In my case I really don't care one way or another; my youngest is finishing up her Masters Degree in Economics and, like the kids of another poster above, my children categorically refuse to ride in child safety seats.

 

Mine needs it.. not sure if i’ll do it or just put it off. I’m 19 so no kids anytime soon lol

 

I assume the dealer inspected it and made the call, then installed the signs? Sucks either way. I hope mine isn't affected.

No, there is no latency when it comes to recalls. I've had to perform recalls on brand-new vehicles, basically as they were being off-loaded from the transport trucks, before even having the shipping plastic removed or being PDI'd.

I can't speak to your other questions except to say that yes it will be addressed at the factory as well, for trucks being built after the issue was ID'd and solution implemented. It probably included 2023 models as a precautionary measure, especially if more than one factory was involved.

Of the 75,300 potentially affected Tacomas, built between "late October 2021 - late May 2022" Toyota anticipates only 5% will actually need to be repaired. That's a total of 3765 vehicles. If your truck was built in September 2022 then yours isn't affected.

 

I wish we could see the welds on "good" and "bad" samples. I still have doubts a dealership can determine it unless it was a gross malfunction on the weld line.

 

Dan2731, can you take some pictures of the welds and post them? I just looked at mine again. You can see at least part of the welds with the plastic wall in place.

 

I gave mine a good pull the other day and heard what sounded like a weld cracking ever so slightly. Going to make an appointment soon to have it fixed….

 

Could have just been paint sticking and cracking loose.
