Sounds about right for a dealership to do that job. Check and make sure the breather for your rear diff isn't plugged up with dirt and road grime, if it is then it will force air to exit the next easiest way which is usually the seals.

Right, I did do that the last diff change. I also used synthetic oil and I swear thats what started the leak. I redrained it and use regular specified gear oil, but it kept leaking.

Now that I have the shop press, I will definitely give this a go instead of going back to the stealership if it happens again. They took me for 900+ bones back in 2018 when the passenger side went out. I just need to get over my fear of brake services. I've always looked at it as a total safety job and bleeding brakes properly scares the hell out of me. Always paid someone to do the brakes.

Update: I just had to look into this more as I was not seeing any new oil on the wheel or hub. I took off the wheel and hub this morning and I could not find any sign of fresh oil. I soaked it, pressure washed all the brake and hub assembly, dried and cleaned it again. Put it all back together and I think I'll drive it for a while. If the brakes start grabbing again, I'll know I was wrong. Thanks for the comments.

Man, those dealerships up there are robbers. The dealership I work at will do it for 300.00. And you can bring all your own parts.

Depends on the dealership. The one I work at charges 130 bucks for an oil change and tire rotation.

Thats a bunch of savings from $900. I might consider driving a good way to save that much. I'll give it a while and see if it is still leaking.

Just to be clear, the 300 is without parts. The Toyota bearings (which are Koyo) are stupid expensive through the dealership. The way to do it is to bring all your parts (bearings, retainers, ABS wheels, snap rings) along with the removed axle assemblies. We have people do it all the time. If you want us to pull the axles and do it all, then it will be more. Best to call and find out for sure. I’m the one doing the work, not the one quoting the work. But 900 with you bringing the parts seems high to me. If the brake shoes have gear oil on them, bring new shoes. The drums can be cleaned, the shoes (once soaked in gear oil) cannot. However, a good machine shop should have a press and fixture to do the axle bearings for you. The pulling the axles is pretty simple. 4 nuts, parking brake cable, and brake line. Provided that it’s not all rusted up…. Then it’s a nightmare…

So I got into mine, brake line was rusty/ wanted to strip. Drivers side- Toyota doesnt make it anymore. Passenger side yes:
    78A10BB5-7964-43A0-BC05-5D8BB8687D25.jpg
seal and oring are less than $10
Had to make my own brake line :
    8220EE2F-FB40-4A21-B469-B683B2FB8CE6.jpg
other part maybe to have is a brake cylinder NAPA 37841.
    Brake bleeder/shoe kit
    23B0C439-25ED-4E02-A18E-E66C12F0BE80.jpg
and some new bolts for the brake cylinder 90080-11148 .84 each. All in case bolts break or strip on my 2001….

ended up taking to local Toyota, $350.
They say if the wheel bearing isnt making noise, run it. Seal replacement is 1yr unlimited miles if it leaks. I let them do it while I sat and watched a movie. Couple hours and didn’t need all the parts

The shop got it done. They said that the old seal "spring" was sitting about half way down the axle shaft. That must have seperated somehow from the seal rendering it useless in retaining itself. They put in a oem seal. Time will tell i guess. I was in and out with 2 hours of labor and out the door was 300. I cant complain there i guess. Time will tell. Happy to have it done.

They were not too impresssed with my backing plate being mostly rusted into garbage and falling off. I probably should have sourced that to be replaced at the same time. Oh well.....

I have heard the backing plates are known to rust away. Mine appears to be okay. I did however be lucky enough to be one of the several that did get a new frame due to the rust recall.

I just found out my passenger-side rear axle is leaking. I decided to take it to a local shop and hopefully, it's not going to be too expensive.

I just did this job on my T100 a month ago. Parts from Yotashop https://www.yotashop.com/wheel-bear...r-wheel-bearing-service-kit-non-abs-kit-1002/ and a Ebay tool https://www.ebay.com/itm/3141238709...bsdVrZoTxK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY cost me about $250 all said. I have access to a press so thats something else to consider if you don’t have access. It’s not a difficult job. Even if you had to buy a press from HF it would still cost less than paying someone else to do it. Or you could take the axles out and take them to a machine shop and have them press everything apart and back together for you. FYI I replaced just the seals about 50,000 miles ago and one just started to leak again. Figured it was time to do the bearings as well, any play in the bearing will cause the seal to fail.

I pulled the hub again to see if any fresh oil was visible, and it was not. I figure it was the Synthetic oil that started this mess. With the fresh regular gear grease, there are no leaks. However, the brakes are still giving me issues. They tend to grab, and I am thinking that is due to the oil contamination. I cleaned them and they worked better for a while, but yesterday they started doing it again. I am thinking I will have the hub turned and replace the rear pads on that side.
