New belt +oil change + air filter. Previous owner didn’t do shit for maintenance. Pretty sure the truck loves me more!572B5759-D4F2-490A-9062-9769102C1410.jpg

There’s a thread floating around here where a guy cuts open all the big name brand filters and compares it to the oem filter.
If I remember correctly the OEM filter has more media and holds more than any other filter for our trucks.

Why are you looking for a bigger filter?

I did some wetland surveys this summer on a 550,000 acre private ranch… Agreed. Owning huge huge tracts of private land is ridic.

Ordered a mount last night. Really looking forward to getting it away from my knee. What a great idea! How did you run the wiring? Were you able to pull it up next to the A pillar or did you just run it up the side of the dash?

Out off habit I guess. On my 3.4 i can add a lager oil filter. It might be 4.0 filter and its 2in bigger than oem 3.4 filter. it adds extra oil more filter media more miles between oil changes. Just thought 2nd Gen peps might have found a bigger one than oem that fits . Hopefully someone has!

check that thread i posted above...the OEM filter is pretty much the best/biggest filter there is for this engine

In terms of appropriate filtration, the OEM oil filters are really very good at it. Our engines are relatively efficient with the OEM oil filters as well, no excessive pressure. I don't understand the reason to add a longer oil filter, it was my understanding there is zero benefit to a bigger oil filter in a properly maintained engine. You're not gaining additional filtration, or mileage, or even cooling. Is it just a matter of want over need? I can get behind want over need.

I never understood the concept of wanting a larger oil filter. Stock filters are actually cheaper than aftermarket, and proven to be just as good or better, and will easily last on a 5k interval even in dirty conditions. Are you going with way longer increments in your oil changes than 5K miles? A larger oil filter does not add capacity to the oil system in a beneficial way... yes the engine takes more oil to fill but that extra oil is in the top of the engine, not in the oil sump, not providing any safety factor at the oil pickup tube, and will only take longer for the oil to heat up and boil off the condensed water vapor.

If you want to go with really long oil change intervals,, then you need really expensive group 5 synthetic oil, and a bypass oil filter setup, like from Amsoil, where one filter is all the time like normal, provides low restriction full time filtering of large particles, and the other sub micron filter only passes like 10% of the oil that is up beyond a certain operating pressure, so the fact that it is so restrictive isn't seen by the actual engine internals or parts that function based on oil flow.

Anyone care to enlighten me on why you think a large capacity filter is better? Hopefully without using the argument that you need more filter area for flow or pressure drop, cause that isn't true in modern toyota filters/engines (although I'm not making that statement generically for all brands).

Edit: Looks like me and @elricfate are thinking along the same lines

Yes, there is. I happened to post this info yesterday on another thread.

There are three oversize options but the largest one sits right under the cover that may require removing it in order to be able to unscrew the filter by hand. I currently have this filter installed but will downsize to the 51068. With the oversize filters, I top off the oil at six quarts. I previously had a Purolator Boss PBL30001 but seems Amazon stopped stocking it. The One PL30001 is available.

Only in my humble opinion of course, but I think you would be better off using a stock size filter and taking that extra 1/2 quart and dumping in your engine after the oil drain has been done and the plug is still out to help flush out the sludge that is always below the drain hole, than you are with a larger filter and adding that 1/2 quart at the actual oil fill.

What benefit do you perceive you are getting with a larger filter, I'm honestly curious? I'm not afraid to admit there are smarter people than me...

@racebug68 I can only speak for myself. Quite simply, bigger is better - I weigh that against the negative effects. Here, the negative effects are paying for the extra oil and the higher price of the oil filter. These tradeoffs I accept because these higher costs are not cost prohibitive to me. I can go bigger, by adding a remote filter kit with a double oil filter setup, but the cost …
