I’m under my truck pretty frequently, I’d say it’s been about 2 weeks since I was under there last and looking in this area. Today I was getting ready to swap out my front diff oil and noticed oil hanging on the front of the transmission bell housing. The color makes me think it’s motor oil and the location makes me think rear main seal. I wiped it down, took it for a 30 min drive and then took this video. My truck has 85k on it, I wouldn’t have expected this from a Toyota.

Anything that might have caused this at this mileage? I recently jumped to 33s and did wheel the truck soon after for a few days. But I’m surprised to see this. Will switching to high mileage oil on my next change help stop this up?

Can try pouring some high mileage oil treatment in. My 06 was always damp, then it stopped, then started being WET 6 months ago. Now its dry 3 months later. Ghost leaks.

It looks a rear main, they aren't that uncommon on Toyota V6's.

Big thing is with a manual, that oil has a chance to get on the clutch. I'd wash it and monitor for now, but you report it to have only just started and its accumulating quickly.

If you do the rear main make sure to re-seal the rear main plate, consider doing the transmission input seal as well.

    I don't think the 6 speed has a input shaft/pilot bushing.

Clean all the oil off, dry it well, and then toss some baby powder or gold bond at the area. This supposedly helps to pinpoint where the oil leaks from.

You are correct the 6 speed does NOT, the 5 speed does.
There is a theory that throw out bearing on the 6 speed failing at a high rate is due to this.

@MurderedTacoV2 id be a happy camper if this resolved itself.

Thanks all, I’d be bummed to have to do a service like replacing these gaskets before I even cracked 100k. I am noticing that there appears to be dampness further down the transmission (which is sloped up, so it could be running down from there). It just doesn’t look like transmission fluid to me.

Could the added strain from bigger tires cause this? I didn’t bury the truck in about 24” of water on the last trip. Could water have entered somewhere and built pressure? I’ve got another wheeling trip on the books this weekend and might just throw in some high mileage additive before then. Just hoping it won’t get worse as I’ll be driving straight through the middle of NV to Mammoth.. not even on an interstate. Extra quart will be in hand.

Best way to spot an oil leak from my experience is like others have mentioned to clean it up really well with a degreaser then add a UV dye to your oil, use a UV light at dusk or night after a day or two too track down where the leak is coming from you might be surprised.

a blocked PCV valve will cause oil leaks. If you haven't taken it off and replaced or cleaned it, you should.

Nah. Bigger tires put more strain on drivetrain components but it’s not gonna make you blow a rear main. If that were the case folks that tow (way more strain than 33s) would be blowing rear mains left and right. It’s a Coincidence at best.

100% this, if it is a problem it will cause a new seal to fail as well.
