Well idk my old 99 Forester was pretty trouble-free. I would've kept it if it weren't for the rust. Changing the alternator and starter was a breeze. I also like 3rd gen Camrys as a beater commuter though. Had good luck with one in Australia.

I did a clutch, injectors, timing belt, starter, and intake manifold gaskets on an EJ22 a few months ago... oh and a wheel bearing. I don't think they're any easier than any Toyotas I've worked on. Sure as hell are gutless though

Where are the failed head gaskets and broken 3rd gear?

    Keep the Tacoma.

    Fix it.

You'll look back at this a year from now, laugh, and tell yourself "why did I almost get rid of my truck?"

Plus, you're not going to get the same utility you talked about and mentioned several times with anything else. You said this when you got rid of the Land Cruiser.

Blown head gasket and needed a general mid-life refresh. I sold it afterward for a $200 loss.

You're probably right. You were also right before when you told me not to do the trade. Oh well, it's nobody's fault but mine for not doing my HW on the KS issue. I had an offer of $8500 for the LC, and I doubt I could get that for the Tacoma as-is.

I don't really go trail-riding anymore so that was part of my thinking. Haven't been off-road in a while.

We would be lying if we said "I've never sold a car at a loss"

Tell you what though, you have a wealth of knowledge here alone and plenty of people willing to walk you through anything to get your truck up and running.

My 98 2.7 4x4 was a total moneypit; I probably lost $5k on that truck. Another dumb purchase where I didn't do my homework.

I wasn't aware of the frames rotting from the inside out in the slat belt at the time; and I also didn't think anything of the unevenly worn tires lol.

BMW, I knew when I bought it that it was going to be the least practical piece of shit I've ever gotten over my head into. And after doing all of the direct injectors (buying 6 special tools to do so) and remaking the entire intake and charge piping.... plus tires, trans and engine tune... I lost 4 grand haha. Was still fun and I learned a lot, but it was a dumb car I didn't need too

I lost some on my RX7.

Not due to the initial purchase cost, but for what I put into it afterward and sold it for. Specialty rotary mechanics are no joke expensive AF.

Few years later I see it in the same condition selling for a lot more than I sold it for; unsure what it went for but I bet the guy made money.

And now? I see the same models on FB and CL for double that.

Yea I'm just a little nervous of this one turning into another moneypit lol. It's always something with old trucks

I've bought cars, fixed a few and sold them for profit.

One car I sold and made money off, and didn't intend to (I set myself up for a loss actually, and didn't lose) was my Focus ST.

Then again I had sold it through my work so I got someone financed on it.

Yeah, I mean at the end of the day I had a lot of fun with it. That DCT would make me buy another. Factory it was 300 crank HP and 300 crank TQ, I had it on the dyno after all my work at 346WHP and 465lb ft of torque... that's at the wheels. Pretty big increase, it was a fast little shit for how small it was and with the 7 gears that could blip shift faster than I could press the paddles I was impressed with it.

I think the 5S-FE might be the most reliable engine Toyota ever made. Either that or the 1UZ-FE.

You literally bought it knowing it had issues, you can't even say you didn't see it coming. That said my truck is just as old and mechanically it's sound. It goes on week long trips all the time without a hiccup. Soon to get a turbo and Haltech even. It's all about how to stay up on your maintenance and sometime it takes a minute to get up on it.
