Ok so I have literally rebuilt my entire front end this year from new upper and lowers, tie rods, Hubs, cv axles and the steering rack. The situation is while backing and turning I get a loud pop sound and it seems like it's coming from the front passenger side. It only seems to do it while backing up with the wheel turned about 90% of the time.
I am almost at a loss as I have replaced everything with a bushing up there just about. My next thing that I could possibly think would be a body mount. I just don't understand why it doesn't do it more often like when driving and making a turn. Any suggestions are appreciated oh and everything is tight.

Any other symptoms, any detectable motion in the truck as a result? Almost sounds like a binding CV axle.

Nothing else noticeable. This was doing this before I started replacing stuff. The popping just made me start doing things that needed to be done anyways with a truck that has almost 200K on it. Oh no sway bar and or endlinks installed so that eliminates those from the equation.

are you turned to full lock (or very close to it)? put some grease on the steering stops on the LCA where the knuckle hits it.

I heard noises like that and it wound up being the cam bolts for doing the alignments

    Mine too.
    It was the cam bolts.
They torque to like 100 ft/lbs. I have lifetime alignment and the issue usual happens AFTER having the alignment done. I crawled under and cranked them down. Problem solved.

Same here. When I replaced my LCA bushings and hardware, I put red-n-tacky on everything to keep it from seizing again. I was retorquing every couple of weeks until they stopped loosening. I think I got a little movement out of them a couple of times. It's easiest with the front end on ramps so you have the weight of the truck on the suspension but have some room to work.
Also, look to see that you don't have a cam tab flattened out. I did and put an ugly bead of weld behind each one. They're nice and sturdy now.

I agree with above.. either you're hitting the steering stops on the knuckle or the LCA cams are shifting around

Thanks for the input I will check on those next. I did crawl back under and ensure the new rack that I installed was torqued tight and it seemed like it stopped for a couple of days and has now returned. So I am going to recheck those again but I am having to replace my new rack again as there is probably 1 to 5 degrees of float in the wheel while driving. I also get to replace my brand new pump assembly as its leaking out of one of the housing bolts. I just can't win for loosing on this here lately.

Float in the steering? That's gotta be related to the pop sound. Is the whole rack shifting around? Have a helper turn the steering while you crawl under and look

Ive also heard pad slap is a sort of common noise under those circumstances. That is what I think I have going on. I hear mine backing into a parking spot where Im switching from drive to reverse and back.

The floating only started happening after the replacement of the rack. The popping was there before and after replacement of the rack.
I replaced the rack due to corrosion, almost 200k on the clock and the popping I thought that was the culprit due to worn out bushings and such.

Mine does it as almost a load change as in going over the street gutter while backing out not necessarily as I am switching from reverse to drive.

Funny, my truck just started doing this same thing a week ago and im trying to figure out the solution. Happens in forward and reverse, steering almost to full lock to the right. Sound coming from passenger front. Sounds like a pop or loud crack. Going to check LCA and cam bolts when I get home. Keep us updated if you find the fix.
