Right on. Ya it seems like wool wax and fluid film are both really safe bets, plus you can get them in black which would be nice. This is going to be my first time doing an undercoating so I’m still trying to find what I want to use. But for me it’s just going to come down to what’s available since shipping is an issue

They're all lanolin based products but the surface shield will adhere up to 2 years.

Do they salt like crazy up in Alaska? And use that salt brine ?

 

I actually just called Toyota today and they scheduled me in to take a look at the frame free of charge. I thought I had missed the recall date given how old my truck is (2008) but they told me there's no expiration date on it oddly enough.

I think they use salt but I’m not totally sure to what degree. But where I’m at is on the ocean and super wet all year too so rust is a pretty big problem

well that's reassuring. I had a bit of a freak out when I put my finger inside the frame and notice flaking

 

Get you some fluid film and coat the frame inside and out. They make a long extension hose to go inside the frame. Touch up high water spray areas like wheel wells and rear axle throughout the year. Coat it yearly. You won't have to worry about it again. Lanolin let's water out while wicking away water spray. It makes the rust turn dormant.

 

Do you think the spray cans will suffice? Or do I need the more expensive 5lb bucket and undercoating gun?

 

I have both and I've found myself using the cans over the buckets. The cans have the ease of ability to spray places you can't get to. I don't have an air compressor with a gun yet.

If you go on ebay you can find a case of 12 cans for like 100 bucks. You could get by with 6-8 cans. But normally, for myself, I'll coat everything really good then come back around like a couple weeks or a month later and do it one more time. If you can, avoid driving in rain for a week or so after you've sprayed it. I've found that it'll actually kind of cure and that gives it time to attract some road grime for an extra bit of protection.

 

The blue stuff is likely just a tamper seal. If the oil was changed at a quick lube or box store type place corporate requires the techs to put it on any drain plugs removed. Then if someone comes back and says you forgot to put oil in, you owe me a new engine, it's obvious when someone has drained it.

Same idea as torque striping a bolt, just run a bead from the bolt onto the pan or whatever the bolt is secured to and it dries/hardens so if it's moved it breaks. Pain in the ass when people glob it on then you can't get a 6 point socket on it next time

Old trick to get you into the Service Department so they can recommend all sorts of (expensive) stuff you probably don't need. There is indeed a cutoff date on the program (12 years from the first in-service date) and unfortunately, your truck is well past it.

 

@VXEric huh...like an anti-tamper seal...never seen that before, but Ive always changed my own oil..interesting in the days of people being "Im suing you" happy, makes sense!

 

Oh trust me they already have. They quoted me a price of $1500-$2000 to take care of maintenance I missed at 60k (sitting at 67k currently)
this pricing includes:
Premium Engine Oil Conditioner (apparently done every 30k miles for motor oil performance)
Transmission flush
Coolant flush
Brake fluid exchange
Power steering flush
Transfer case oil change
Front and Rear differential oil change
a few other things I didn't catch but those were the major ones.

 

They would never flush your trans unless you pressed it. I asked them to and they literally talked me out of it stating it's not worth the money and to just do the drain/fill. Color me shocked. So I just had them do the drain/fill before I learned to do it myself. Dealerships for some reason call this service a flush.

Oil conditioner is a waste and the diff service is easily done and I mean super easily done yourself.

 

Yeah I don't know what they plan to do with it but I do recall them calling it a flush and saying transmission is due at 60k but could possibly hold off on it for a bit.
