2nd Gen catalytic convertor smell?

So. My buddy was behind me a few weeks ago., told me mine stunk.. driving home from hospital Thursday another 2nd gen passed me and his smelt pretty bad. Then my buddy was goin to work yesterday morning and was behind one on the highway and he said he could smell it the whole time until he passed him... my question is.. is this normal? Is it bad?

Ha yea.. so your car can smell like a rotten egg and cherry omelet.

It is apparently fairly normal on newer cars. Do not know why. Maybe its the smaller catalytic converters. You would think that sulfur compounds are not any more desirable than other catalyzed waste. I have never noticed it from one of my vehicles and I frequently follow the wife so's I can get some motorcycling in on the way to "shakey's pizza".

In an attempt to build a profile of the smell, do you get the tachometer up above 3-4000 with any frequency or do you hang around down in the 1500-2000 range.

Flat highway driving? what speed for how long?

My theory is that its from a lack of proper heating. BUt the opposite might be true.

 

yeah i have heard that hangin out in low RPM range isnt neccessarily good for the system. i do alot of highway 65-75 MPH, ive been trying to keep it around or under 2000RPM.. but i do get on it more often than not. so i would have to go with my better judgement of my driving style and say its not because im hanging too low or revving too high, weve had alot of ice around here lately and im at the 2nd highest road in this town, so if you could imagine that there is 4 different hills i could take to my road, and i always opt for the steepest, and try to make it in 2wd. a little long-winded response but my exhaust system gets the proper work out that it needs.. IMO of course.
