    The mixer is the hot / cold handle , usually a lever . Is yours a lever with one big round finish plate , or seperate hot and cold levers or knobs .

    The EPDM rubber pan is usually located at the bottom of the shower , under the sloped mud bed and directly against the subfloor , it could be hard to tell if it is there , but if you don't have one that is definitely your problem .

    Time to tear up the shower floor...good thing about slate is that you can replace it (after putting down the membrane) and never notice the new and old since slate is so varied in color, texture, etc.

    If they didn't have the sense to put a membrane down then I'm going to guess and say that they didn't use the right drywall in there either - the stuff with the greenish colored backing paper - and didn't put any cement board, etc down either. So I'll side with your wife and say you've got to replace the whole shower now :) Sorry.

    pop up one tile on the threshold of the shower entry and see if you can spot the membrane under there.

    If you do replace the shower , use the Schluter system for the walls and use their presloped pan and curb , then it's bomb proof .

    yep...pry up one of those tiles on there and see in the membrane is under there. if it was installed right (or at all) it should wrap up and over that hump.

    That doesn't seem right , with an EPDM liner , there is a two part drain , the lower piece collects the rubber and the top sandwiches the rubber and accepts the drain finish . I've never been able to see the top of the rough in pipework , I am willing to bet that they have used a floor drain rather than a shower drain .

    If that is the case the water will be getting under the tiles between the rough pipe ( the white part you see ) and the grout .
