Is cold air intake worth it?

Actually I don't; I fail to understand why anybody would knowingly do something to shorten the life of a not insignificant investment like a truck.

To make it clear, I am running oem filters in all of my trucks. If I wanted to add a cai to my tundra for engine bay bling, it would be oem.

Both of our statements can be correct. There may be more silicone in the oil from a cai AND it can also be hard to quantify that a cai actually shortens the life of an engine by any real degree due to the large amount of variables at play.

My blackstone results say different. Plus run a filter sock on your filter you would be amazed .

The reason I argue against K&N style filters isn't to prove the fanbois wrong (although baiting them is kind of fun), it is to warn folks like @jconn who may not know any better to say away. If someone chooses to put one on their vehicle, ain't nuthin' any of can do to stop them.

Bobistheoilguy is no shit real. I have seen engine warranty denied due to air filter. You ought to care unless you keep oem filters always.

Only way to see if it’s worth it if you dyno your truck before and after installing an intake system. Personally $400 plus is a bit much for an intake. I usually look for a used one and try it out. Got an afe momentum gt with the scoop for $225. The other option is a reusable drop in high flow air filter. Heard afe filters are good. Just my 2 cents

I've ran K&N air filters for decades on numerous vehicles including Tacoma's without issue. Yes, I've read peoples opinions on them about over oiling and filtering less debris. I don't care. K&N filters just fine. For whatever it's worth Toyota's TRD air filter is the exact same media as K&N and uses a similar if not the same oiling/cleaning process. :burnrubber:

You can always look at other peoples dyno reports and see that a CAI gets you nothing.

To be honest I just got my truck in July and barely starting to learn about it. But I’ve yet to see a person from here with a personal dyno test. If you can link someone’s dyno that would be cool to look at.

Sorry, not gonna do your work, but it's been done and it's nothing new. If it did work, wouldn't the person selling it have a dyno to show you?

Not everyone that buys an intake goes and dynos their truck to see if what the brand claims is true.

the 3rd gen Tacoma 3.5 v6 uses the same filter element as the Tundra 5.7 v8. It is getting plenty of air with the oem filter.

I’ve had a dyno done and the results clearly speak for themselves.

I’ve personally poured sand on a k&n filter as well as an OEM. Neither test left any sand, I mean silicon, on the napkin that was placed below. Therefore both the k&n and OEM have similar sand filtering capabilities. So you are wrong.

I also placed the k&n in my truck after the test and don’t see any sand in the intake tube. Further proof that it can filter sand just fine.

Only CAI I would consider for your Tundra is Stillen. The air intake temps will be ambient with that true CAI system pulling air from the front of the trucks grille.

    https://stillen.com/products/2014-2020-toyota-tundra-trupower-by-stillen-cold-air-intake

Do some CAI systems suck? Yes. Do a few actually improve performance? Yes. I have plenty of data logged hours from my Edge CTS3 before and after installing my Banks Ram Air on my D-Max. During some drives before the CAI, my air intake temps were 25*F hotter than ambient. So on a 92* day I could be reading 117*F cruising down the freeway. In town where the intake would get heat soaked…135+* was common.

I agree. Back in the 2002-2005 timeframe Dodge told all the dealerships to get rid of the K&N kits for the Cummins powered trucks. Warranty claims from “dusting” the engine were coming in and it was getting expensive and they would have to cover the costs.

I had a CAI on my 2004.5 Dodge CRD and warranty was voided. I never had any issues (I used a dry filter media from Donaldsons) but it was noted.
