Quick Milestar Patagonia MT-02 Review

I don’t see much on these tires so I figured I’d post about my recent purchase. I have a couple thousand miles on them so far, we’ll see how they last.

For reference I am coming off of a set of ProComp A/T Sports in 37x12.5. These were D rated.

The Milestars are 38x13.50 and C rated. These weigh about 8 pounds more than my ProComps and came in at 82 pounds per tire.

They balanced just as well as the ProComps with 10oz of balancing beads. Zero evidence of wobble even up to 85-90 (which is pretty much max speed for me).

My ProComps were really stiff so I ran them on the street around 25psi (yes that was probably a bit low) where the Milestars I run at 30. The ride is better somehow with the new ones. Doesn’t follow grooves. I can tell there is a little wiggle with the bigger size and lighter rating when I hit a bump in a corner.

Sound. You’d think these would be loud due to the design. Again, these are as quiet or a little more so than my ProComps. I think that’s due to the way they are designed where you drive on the center crown of the tread. We’ll see how this lasts once the tires start to wear.

These were a little more true to size (aka I had to trim a lot to get them to fit - not done yet either). Aired up and off the truck they measured 37.5. My ProComps had about 20k and measured just under 36.

Side note. These tires seem to be pushed by a lot of YouTube sponsored people. At least from what I found. I paid full price for these from discount and am not affiliated with discount or Milestar. I just like the tires. Although credit to @Discount Tire for helping me get them ordered and dealing with me waffling between 37’s and 38’s.

 

Youtubers do run them, but where Matt goes with them and all kinds of weather, he’s the guy pulling people out. They can’t suck.

 

They’re terrible if you’re wheeling east of the Mississippi. Literally couldn’t pay me to run them.

 

You probably have lots of clay to deal with, out west they seem to work fine.

 

Most of the stuff I saw seemed to be people getting them for free and reviewing them then jeep forums saying the tires suck and are only pushed by YouTubers that get them for free.

It was hard to find good reviews. So much drama. But they are nicely priced and came in the size/rating I wanted. Kind of wish they were 12.50’s though.

 

They are advertised as an AT/MT hybrid. So I’d assume in the land of boggers these aren’t going to be great.

 

Have these on my JK....won't ever buy again - good in rocks but terrible wear on street. About 10K miles on them and they look like shit and loud. Was worth the shot.

 

I put some Patagonias on a truck because they were cheap and looked decent. Happy with them at first because they were quiet and tracked well, but over time they wore faster than most tires I've had and they had the worst flat spots after sitting that I've ever had on a tire. I would literally have to drive five miles with the tires feeling like they were out of balance before they warmed up and became round again. The fast wear was disappointing but the flat spots after sitting was annoying enough that I won't buy them again.

 

The profile of the casing just isn’t good. I tried digging back through some pictures from friends that have had them and switched away and it’s shocking how rounded off the shoulders are compared to a Cooper casing.

Contrary to popular belief, the SE has technical crawling. It’s just not dry 80 grit sandpaper like Moab or Sand Hollow where guys pimp the milestars hard. My personal pick is a Maxxis Razr MT and plenty of friends are happy on the various cooper brands and Nitto Trail Grapplers here.

 

This brand used to interest me until the prices started climbing. I'm not sure if it's a factor of pandemic economics or not.

If you watch Dirt Lifestyle on the Tubes of You, he just said he'll never buy them again. He's had six sidewall punctures on the trails with them in a very short span of time. This is compared to his preferred brand (BFG, I think), where's had very few in a larger span of time. Considering what mud terrains cost these days, these tires are quickly becoming a brand I'll skip for now.

 

What pressures did you run them at? Did you have the MT’s or MT02’s?

 

I think I watched that video. Can’t quite remember as I watched a bunch of videos before I bought them but in his case I swear it was either using the older model or it was a fluke because his friends weren’t shredding. Still not good though.

 

He's said something about it previously (I believe that's the one you're referring to). But his total round-up is in the video that came out on Sunday.

Overall, I don't have anything against the tires. I just think the price hike kind of killed it for me. Punctures are par for the course in wheeling. It happens. I've had it happen numerous times to me. It just hurts much less when it's a cheap tire compared to one that runs $300+. They do seem to do well for Matt in his adventures, but that's not the kind of trails I'm running. You'll also notice that Paul from Fab Rats doesn't run Milestars, but seems to love BFG (this may be a sponsor-thing as well). And they run the same trails.

I'm the guy that's run $100 recaps for wheeling and I loved them. I wouldn't daily them, but killing a tire was a shoulder shrug and a quick order of another.

 

Ah got it. That’s definitely not the one I saw since that would have been at least a month ago. I’ll check that new one out though.

I only recently heard about Milestar when I started looking for C/D rated 37’s to replace my ProComps. So I wasn’t aware of the price hikes. These did come in around 150-200 cheaper than other brands in the same size.

Initially I was going to go with a BFG since it was around ten pounds lighter than my old 37’s. Then I saw why - it only measured around 35.5 or something. Pretty small.

They are for sure a lot more flexy in the sidewall than my ProComps so I can see sidewall punctures could be an issue. Seems like they made some changes with the new model though. Fingers crossed I guess. Haha

I ran some 33's on my 2015 Ram 1500 for about a year. I bought them for $150 each back then, had them siped, and was surprised at how well they did in the snow. Did great off-road. They were much quieter on the street than I anticipated, and I was happy with them. But, they did seem to be wearing fairly quickly.



When I bought tires a year ago, the Patagonia MTs were a premium-priced tire and there are much, much better tires in their price range.

Matt seems to go through a set every 2-3 months, but with making over $50k a month off of YT, he can afford it.

 

Seems pretty quick to be replacing them every 2-3 months unless he drives a lot or is sponsored by them and gets new ones constantly to keep them fresh looking.

As for price, they were 100-200 cheaper than any other tire in this price range. At least when I looked.

Maybe prices have changed lately? I also don’t consider a Patagonia to be a premium brand. Which is why the price was appealing. At least for me.

 

I think you are correct in regards to the giant sizes, but for the more common lifted sizes, like 285/70R17, they are the same price as many mainstream brands and within a few bucks...

 

Honestly if that was the case for my size I might have gone with a more well known brand. Plus there are almost no 38’s. It’s either 37 or 39 which is way too big. Well…for now.

I’m happy with them, but I really curious to see how they do with miles on them. Their whole shtick is riding on the crown to reduce noise. That crown is going to be the first to go.
