TRD Pro VS Off Road

my trd off road is nicer than your pro.

 

That's all fluff, which translates into a nice package and if you want those options, the SR5 won't deliver. I like the Fox shocks, wheels LEDs and black lamp housings on the Pro but it's still an SR5 with a TRD OR package at its core.

 

Just because you don't want it doesn't mean it makes sense to make the comparison. Apples to oranges, my friend.

 

It's about time someone around here gets it. Reason and logic!

 

Well, I had to find some way to justify buying a Pro besides wanting that sweet Solar Octane paint!

You did your homework!

I just put a dollar value in my head and restricted myself to stay under it.

Most of the Tacomas due-into the dealership (as I was reviewing MSRP on Sport) were over $40K.

My Sport's only options were the floor mats & door sills for total MSRP $38,803--below the $40K threshold.

The fact is was Midnight Black attracted me to it even more! (I'd never owned a black vehicle but made aware of the pains of owning that color)

So far, I have no issues and I love my truck.

 

V6 auto6 4x4 DCSB 3rd its all the same, different options thats it. I like how the Pro sits over the other trims but it's more or less the same truck.

For a little over 50k MSRP you can configure a Chevy Silverado 2500 WT gas V8 regular cab 4x4 Z71 Alaskan package 2 alternators upfitter switches cloth seats in a military green hue, and for a few grand more you can make it a 4dr. No heated seats no LEDs and no fog lights.

You could go LT, or LTZ to get that stuff, or go GMC to get LEDs on a Regular cab, and op for a diesel.

That's an apples to oranges comparisson.

 

And that last bit is key! There is no bad Tacoma as long as the owner likes it. Doesn't matter if it's a 2WD SR with no frills, a limited with all the options, a TRD Sport to dodge chrome, a Pro blasting down a desert trail an SR5 with the Chrome package cruising the ranch, or a TRD OR modded like crazy flexing the suspension on 35s in a mall parking lot.

Of course ALL Tacomas are "the same truck" because they are actually THE SAME TRUCK. That doesn't make the packages or trims equivalent in use or value. A taco with a moon roof is the same truck as one without, but guess what, the moon roof has a price tag on it so trying to compare the prices is silly. You'll obviously pay for the added feature. Just because YOU don't want a feature, whether that's the moon roof, heated seats, suspension, MTM system, or any other, doesn't mean the are an unjustifiable expense or unnecessary. You aren't the only person using or buying a truck so your preference doesn't dictate what is or is not practical.

 

Asking about the Pro vs OR and the 4Runner vs Tacoma...we have both (and an older Tacoma - my son's now) and there are benefits to each. I bought my Tacoma in Jan of 2019, and have had no issues (other than a recall on the fuel pump and maybe a couple of other small things that were done at time of service).



I have around 195K miles on my Tacoma so far, many of those in 4WD. I did not buy the Pro because I could not justify the extra dollars knowing the OR was as capable as I needed, and I'd wear the truck out; basically rendering the added cost on trade/sell useless. I find the truck comfortable enough for me and a front seat passenger. I usually leave the back seats down and my dog finds that comfortable. We own a horse farm (boarded on 2 sides by a river) and the size of the truck is fantastic as it allows me to drive along small trails on our property and maneuver easily wherever I need to go. I spend most of my time driving on small rural roads and not highways and the power is perfectly fine. For me the truck is a tremendous value and I would buy another to replace this in a NY minute.

My wife and I are empty nesters now and late last year, my wife decided she wanted a smaller vehicle - she's had full size vehicles for the past 25 years as she was a stay at home mom and hauled kids everywhere. Before kids she had sportier cars - Corvettes, 5 and 7 Series BMWs (yes we were young and stupid...reliability obviously meant nothing). She's had MANY mom vehicles - from Excursions to Tahoes to Surbabans to Landcruisers to Luxury High Top Conversion Vans (she LOVED those behemoths). We thought she wanted a Land Rover Defender, but a friend had one and had SO many issues; so she went reliability and picked the 4Runner.

I've only been in the vehicle a few times since she purchased it (end of Feb 2022), but I must say I am impressed with the build quality of this thing. It handles WONDERFULLY around our property and is fine on the road/highway. We bought it at MSRP...and to be honest I would have paid 10K over and been happier than buying many other vehicles in that price range and higher (like the Defender). My wife has around 9K miles so far on her car and I expect she will grow tried of it in a couple of years and want something else. It is that reason I was eager to buy her the 4Runner....I know I'll get good money for it (especially since I paid MSRP).

I love the 4Runner, in fact if I did not need a truck bed I would buy one as well. The power is lacking I'm sure for most but honestly for me and my wife it is a non issue. The tech is defiantly not on par with newer vehicles we considered. Looking at tech, comfort, 0-60, quiet ride, etc...the 4Runner or the Tacoma is not number 1 in any category and I suspect not in the top quartile. However to me both cars are comfortable, easily maneuverable in the city and country. They both offer dependability and capability at a reasonable price. They are both tremendous values and make sense for our needs....that out weighs our wants. That being said if my wife decides she wants a Defender...she'll be driving a Defender.

If you need a truck bed and do not need towing power to me the answer is TACOMA. If you do not need a bed and want a capable SUV buy a 4Runner. AS for the Pro vs OR...if you are going to redo the suspension anyway, I'd do an SR5 and build away. If you're looking for an investment...look at vacant land, buildable property.

 

I'm not comparing prices of the Tacomas, I'm comparing the drive train and wheel base. Obviously the more expensive Tacoma will cost more money. IMO the trucks are very similar, my opinion has no bearing on price so it doesn't matter.


There's the Ranger Raptor coming around the corner, if Ford sticks to their announcement. Not that I think it will have a huge impact on Tacoma sales, but that's what Toyota, and Toyota dealers should be paying attention to.

 

The 2nd gen Taco and the 4Runner have the same drive train too, but saying they are the same thing isn't even remotely reasonable. The packages do change things, so saying the Trail is the same as the Pro, so that makes comparing the Pro to an SR5 reasonable is well... unreasonable. Yes, all the V6 auto Tacos are build off the same platform, but that doesn't mean comparing a base model to a top trim isn't silly.

 

Still rather have a long bed, and even better an access cab Pro added to the line up, maybe something like a SR with Fox shocks and LED lamps.

Obviously it's not the same, I hear Ford is adding a offroad package to their new SD lineup XL base model. Something like that for the Tacoma line up would be awsome.

 

I think the Trail is the closest to a base model with an off road package you'll see them do, and it's hilariously priced higher than the TRD Off Road. That is the one I can't wrap my head around.

 

It's nuts!

I'd get a LR OR AC the bronze Trail wheels maybe the grill, or the SR grill, Pro lamps, the TRD Foxes, or go AM, OEM rear seat delete, and maybe some caramel katskinz. Before considering the Pro.

 

To each their own, for sure. I went down the mod rabbit hole on my Tundra, only mildly, and I don't want to do it again. I just want a stock truck that is already dolled up, so I'm going for the Pro. Hoping to have my trade in be enough that I essentially drove my Tundra for free and I've just been paying for the Taco Pro this whole time.

 

That’s how you get to 10k. Sr5 non trail to pro. Comparing apples to apples trd of is not a 10k delta more like 2-3k and the pro has even more equipment like the shocks/skids and exhaust/wheels, that you can’t even get on or

 

I know this. It's the point I've been making.
