Hey everyone. Kind of a noob in the car part of things but learning everyday.

Bought a first gen recently, 2002 Tacoma 2.7 PreRunner.

Want to upgrade shocks, believe they are still original. Going with 4600s, don’t want a lift.

Also want to replace the leaf springs, how can I do that without lift? I want leaf springs with no additional height. Any recommendations?
    Thanks in advance everyone

4600 series shocks are as OEM as you can get- no worries there.

Most folks suggest General Springs for OEM leaf spring replacements, but there was a post within the last few weeks where the OP was unhappy with them. FWIW, it also looks like General Springs, Huskey, and I think Doorman on rock auto all had some slight variation of the same part number. :notsure:

I’ve looked at General Springs HDs. Seems like overall consensus is happy with them, understand there will be some bad batches.

Are 5100s better or 4600s? For smooth ride but also if I will be constantly loading the bed

    Thank you

I can't comment on the ride quality between the 5100s vs 4600. I have 5100s in the back, but I've never run 4600s. For sure HD springs if you put weight in the bed often- I don't think you can really go wrong either way with the shocks. It should be noted that non-rebuildable shocks (like the 5100 and 4600) have a 50k life span. Even if they aren't physically damaged at that point, they need to be replaced.

Ok noted. Thanks for all the info.

I’m gonna do a little bit more research on the general springs HDs. The box comes with everything needed right? Or do I need to make any custom changes to my truck to take these HDs? Seen something about brake lines and cutting the exhaust

The HDs will probably just have a higher spring rate (stiffer) to support the extra weight. This may or may not result in some unwanted lift when unloaded, but it shouldn't be a ton. You'll also notice some height difference between your current sagged springs and any new spring you put on.

Other than the leaf packes themselves, you will need at a minimum new U bolts. They are a single-use item. You may also need new forward eye bolts, and shackles and bolts, depending on their current condition. The OEM shackle bolts are pressed into the shackle plates, so replacing them may just be easier. There are a few recent threads covering how to setup the truck and jack stands for this job, and the things to look out for when replacing the springs.

You only need an extended brake line and cut the exhaust if you're lifting the truck.

Ok thank you for the help. Looks like I’m pretty set on General Springs HD.

Ok to clarify. If I get 4600s (no lift) I wouldn’t need to make any extra adjustments? (Brake lines, exhaust)
Second part of the question is do I need a certain length shock for the new springs height adjustment since I heard those the HDs give you about 1.5” inch rear lift.

Another question is, will it be easier to get 5100s in case I need to adjust the height of the front?

    Thank you
