Okay, so I’ve been trying to diagnose and remedy a new vibration noise coming from my front end with no luck. I’ve searched around here and tried a few things others have recommended without success.

I have an 03 TRD 4x4, 3.4, ext cab with 148k miles. At around 80k I installed the OME lift kit for about a 2” gain. Installed diff drop as well.

Recently I drove the truck from Oregon to Virginia doing ~700 miles a day, primarily at 75 mph. The sound developed towards the end of the trip. At speeds above 20 mph, it sounds like a constant deep vibration noise or propeller sound. It’s almost as if I can feel the resistance the truck is pushing through. There is no change I can detect when turning the vehicle. It does not change based on transmission gear or engine RPM.

I’ve replaced the drivers CV axle and diff bearing (with a bushing), but the sound persists. I don’t want to just keep replacing components until it stops. Any clues?

What’s the condition of your carrier bearing?

When’s the last time you changed the rear diff oil?

*couldn’t hurt if you’re sure it’s front end to check tire pressure and balance. Front end bushings and the like in good shape?

All my gear boxes get new fluid every 30k. I haven’t crawled under to check the carrier bearing yet because it seems very much to be in front of me when I’m rolling. My bushings and ball joints all seem tight still, but I did notice the boots cracking. So I’m about to replace all of those. I figure 150k is a fine time to do it.

Is it possibly the front wheel bearings? The sound doesn’t appear to change when I turn. I’ll crawl under to check the carrier bearing too and report back.

Have you ruled out the easy stuff? Tire rotation, rotors, etc.

I checked for uneven wear, air pressure, and rotated the tires. All seemed normal. I didn’t specifically check the rotors when I had the wheels off, but nothing struck me as odd and the noise does not change when I use the brake. Other than slowing in concert with the truck’s speed.

A deep growl constant sound is typical wheel bearing and can cause the steering wheel to vibrant if it's the front,
Typical the rear bearings go out before the fronts and usually the rear axle breather valve is plugged,
I just replaced my front bearing at 715k miles,
The noise sounded like it was coming from the rear tho

Is that the first time you’ve replaced the bearings at 715k!? If so, that’s amazing.

Update: The sound was coming from the driver side front wheel bearing. When I had the knuckle off to replace the ball joints, I could feel the roughness and resistance when i spun the hub. Replaced both, driver and passenger wheel bearings and now the sound has gone. Thank you everyone for the help!
