Yeah stop leak wont do anything for a cracked head...
if fact it'll make things worse....

But it will rule out options......real quick.....good and bad....
Might tell you a simple head gasket would also be a colossal waste of time and money......

Also if simple gasket.....it buys time......at least until you get the other eye open.....survey your options..
BUT...count on throwing away radiator and thermostat......

and for god's sake....get an elbow and joint the two heater hoses together....by pass heat core........1st grader could figure that one out....shit.....

5VZ different story......too many things to go wrong......no stop leak.....
    pull heads immediately.......

America is in trouble......too narrow minded......and drive by bashers without getting the whole story.....guess if fox news or toyota decrees something.....it must be the gospel..forever......

Fixing quick fix's is a whole industry......and business is booming......

And everyone here knows I'm not a fan of the pink coolant......
To switch from whats worked for 100yrs......
because its safe for your dog......
Russia is counting on these kind.....

what next......soy based wire insulation that naturally breaks down in high heat......
like they had back in the 90's......
Or perfectly good gasoline they decided to pour corn syrup into ........

yeah you can stick all that eco shit back up your #!@, where it all came from....

I've been searching for info like this for a couple months and never came across this thread till today. Prolly cuz I was searching for the 3rz...

In March, I started burning coolant and took it to my mechanic who doesn't do head work anymore and I didn't know what to do. He told me about this head gasket sealer that you just pour it in your radiator and it seals up the leaks. So I thought, "Wow! What an amazing solution!" and never thought twice.

Two weeks ago it started doing the same thing, and once again I wasn't ready to pull the head to do a proper fix, so guess what I did. Yep, you got it! I poured more of that sludge into my radiator... But this time it didn't work...

    So here I am...

    20221011_201038.jpg

Replacing every part of my cooling system, here's the thermostat housing:

    20221010_191628.jpg

    This stuff is like wax!

And now the top of my block:

    20221011_201134.jpg 20221011_201130.jpg 20221011_201127.jpg 20221011_201122.jpg

Now notice that the head gasket has been removed, it's not on the engine block in the pics. And as you can see, all the passages for the coolant to pass through, especially the little tiny ones to keep my head cool, are mostly closed up.

Since then I've scraped most of it off and cleaned up the top of the block, but it's still inside, hard and crusty like Calcium or hard water.

I'm prolly gonna start a new post about this cuz I'm trying to find out if anyone has had any luck with getting this out while the head is off and everything's disconnected and opened up like this. But I'd appreciate it if anyone here had any suggestions.

1st pic, front cyl, at 9 o'clock and 3rd pic at 3 o'clock. Looks like a pretty healthy eroded divot and the top piston ring is peeking at us.

    Might have a cracked ring.

I'm not seeing what you're saying. I was just trying to show how that head gasket sealer clogged up my passages.

This is what it looks like cleaned up:

Looks like an eroded spot to me.

Id still take it to a machine shop, there is some piston damage thats visible but its you could run it that way. Looks like theres pitting around the firing ring. The block needs to be decked. How does the head look?

I'm not sure exactly how the head looks, I didn't bother cleaning it and inspecting it myself. I'm pretty sure it's warped, regardless. I set it on a level surface and it had a slight teeter, like a table at a diner. It's at the machine shop now, I haven't heard anything from them yet. There's no way I can deck the block, I'm just gonna have to hope for the best when I have the head milled and tested.

There is definitely damage to the #1 piston, but it's been running that way since the first time I started burning coolant about 7 months ago, that's when my mechanic put that sealer in and I continued to drive that way till about 2 weeks ago.

If the surface of the block isnt perfectly smooth and level your wasting your time, its just as important to get the block surfaced as is the head.

Yeah I agree with you, but unfortunately this is gonna have to be temporary until I get another vehicle and have my engine rebuilt. This is my DD. I've been told that most of the head gaskets in the top-end kits are made for this kind of application, meaning unable to pull the block and have it cleaned and resurfaced. That they're made to compensate for imperfections between the two.

Completely agree with this! I've spent countless hours scrubbing the inside of the coolant passages between the cylinder walls and block with tiny bore brushes and is still not completely out. That stuff is stuck in there and I can't get it all out or even find a chemical that will break it down without ruining something else.
