model 3-dual motor my friend let me drive; he was excited to show me everything from acceleration to the fart app. You know, the sort of stuff that guys say when they have a Telsa, and I own an ICE-sportscar.

While I was blown away by the acceleration (see my last post)...

He also wanted to demo the autopilot while I was driving. Set it up, and then we approached a contruction zone. He voices that it will manage this road and then we almost blew through the cones. I was dumbly amazed by the acceleration, so I figured everything else would be equally amazing. Not so. I had to abruptly correct when it was clearly apparent autopilot wasn't going to recognize the cones and we were going into an open pit. Fortunately my skeptical self still had hand near to wheel and paying attention to adjust so I wouldn't ruin his new car.

The owner did become a bit more sheepish about his enthusiasm about autopilot after that incident.

However, it does seem to follow standard road lines just fine.

Perhaps the software is better since last year.
Some will say, well you should be paying attention anyway? well, then, what is the point then of autopilot? pay attention or not since the system might fail? I'd rather pay attention 100% then.

However, I like driving, meaning actually driving, so autopilot would probably never be used by myself.

I'm not an owner, but certainly a prospective buyer. The sheer performance is intoxicating.

This is more Hyudai related than Teslas, and relying on AI and not operating the vehicle via the app.

When using auto park to exit a parking space in reverse, will the vehicle recognize if the vehicle in the next stall is parked crooked to the point backing straight out isn't possible?

 

First time supercharging. Tried to grab a beer while the car charging from 19%, but the supercharger was too fast and service too slow, fully recharged accidentally and unnecessarily in just over 30 min. Got a notice that the car was full and I was going to get charged for loitering. Really only needed 5-10 minutes at most on the charger, then could finish with 120v 15A at my destination. Total cost for the 3+ hour road trip charging was $19.

 

I'd bet that this post will show up in someone's google search at some point, since I'm sure others have thought about installing a solar array on their EV. Glad to know that the math says the juice isn't worth the squeeze with current technology.

 

New Fast EV01 19" wheels showed up yesterday, didn't bother opening the boxes before taking them down to the powdercoater today. Turns out they are missing the aero filler plates. Sigh. I'll need to contact the vendor. Although I did get to check out my 18" wheels they still had, they were 'scuffed' in prep for powder coat, and all that really means is the finish is now dull. The wheels don't look bad at all to flip.

Did have an alarming moment on the drive back from over the mountains yesterday from the other side of the state. We were driving through an area that had massive fires days ago, only rain days earlier had helped suppress the fires. The kind where the guardrails on the windy mounting highway are deformed from heat. It suddenly smelled like we were in a campfire, so I put the car's air on recirculate. We had gotten out a bit earlier at a rest stop in the light rain, but it was enough. The windshield instantly fogged over faster than I had ever seen obstructing the view of the road, immediately switch the car to defrost but it isn't happening fast enough and I'm literally severely struggling to see on a windy 2 lane head on mountain highway in the fog and rain. Switched the fan to max but it disabled the defrost. Switched it back to defrost and slowed way down and the windshield slowly cleared up. I'll need to play with it some more to figure out how to resolve that quicker should it occur again. Had it been on I90 (the alternative major straight highway) I would have engaged autopilot, but I was not confident in that system on something as extremely windy as highway 2.

To top the trip off, took a large rock to the window right in the driver line of sight coming over the pass and put a good chip and stared crack point in the windshield. Less than a month old. I'm sure with the front cameras and size, that isn't a free windshield.

Autopilot is great IMO, but it is not full self driving, nor should it be mistaken for it. It is just very advanced cruise control primarily for simple highway use. Anything with construction or roadway changes in progress, I would not rely on autopilot to navigate, that seems in the FSD automation level range. I am very much a driver. I've not used cruise control in 15+ years, including driving from Seattle area to So Cal and back. But I have a new appreciation for autopilot, I don't know that I'd be willing to pay for it as an add-on, but since it comes included on the newer Teslas I certainly take advantage of it periodically. Rush hour stop and go, it is far more relaxing that dealing with the stop/go/stop/go/stop BS. And yesterday after driving for nearly 5.5 hours over the course of the day, it was really nice to just put the car on autopilot for the last 30 minute highway stretch home in the rain after grabbing dinner.

Yeah, long story short, if you want all the advantages of a ground up EV truck buy a Rivian. If you want a truck that still feels like the old traditional trucks buy a Ford. Vehicles built from the ground up as an EV will have vastly superior design advantages compared to those that try and take an ICE platform and retrofit it into an EV (other things being equal). I also think there is a big difference in companies that are solely EV vs those that are ICE companies with an EV offering.

In other F150 news, it is projected the Model Y will overtake the F150 in global sales this year.

I did make a goof in those calculations I will need to correct. I incorrectly stated the 3 will charge at 4mi/hr for the calculations on 12A. Actual is 3mi/hr on 12A, it is 4mi/hr on 16A which is what I currently use at home till I get around to installing my wall charger.

 

Like the Lucid, which essentially has exterior dimensions of a 3 Series but interior room of a 5 Series.
Great possibilities when the engineers are able to think outside the legacy system box.

 

Latest car software update addresses this issue.

"When Driver Door Unlock Mode is enabled, long pressing the interior driver door switch will unlock all doors and the trunk. To access Driver Door Unlock Mode, tap Controls > Lock > Driver Door Unlock Mode."

Important into: Figured out how to emergency defrost, double tap the defrost button. Single tap on defrost activates the AC to dehumidify the air and blows cold air slowly on the window which removes moisture from the cabin air and is the best way to defrost if urgency is not an issue. But it is slower. Double tapping the defrost button activates max heat and max fan (which turns the icon from blue to red) for the most rapid defrost possible, but will not ultimately remove the moisture from the cabin. However, should you be blind with a fogged over windshield on a windy 2 lane mountain highway, it will very rapidly clear the fogged windshield, unlike standard defrost mode. There is a lot to the car that is a learning curve.

In regards to my missing 19" wheel aero inserts, I have not heard back from the vendor after contacting them. However, because I am signed up for shipping notifications from UPS, FedEX and USPS, I received a shipping notification that Fast (the wheel manufacture) sent me something directly today with a shipping weight of 6lbs, which presumably are the wheel aero inserts. Supposed to arrive Friday. Once I've confirmed the insert issue is resolved, I'll be back to the powder coater.

Tesla headlight drama from May 2022:
In the most recent Tesla model 3 design refresh, the cars were updated with matrix LED headlights. While the matrix headlight functionality isn't enabled yet, NHSTA just approved matrix headlight use in the US in Feb 2022. So the matrix functionality should be available at some point in the future with a simple pushed over the air update. Unfortunately just days ago, it seems the older reflector LED lamps are installed on newly delivered cars. Tesla hasn't acknowledged the change yet. It is unclear if it is a supply chain issue, or if the matrix LED headlights are going to exclusively come on the Performance model 3, as they do exclusively with the Performance model Y. With my delivery coming soon, I'm hoping to see the matrix headlights on my Performance model 3.

 

Certainly yes, but not so helpful when needing it in the car immediately while driving.

 

I had this rainbow appearance issue on the trim of my new model 3. It was on the car since day 1. Initially I didn't think anything of it, just some annoying residue of whatever protective film was on the car and would need to be cleaned off. So I washed the car, but it didn't come off. Odd. So I used some exterior plastic detailer, and it appeared to go away until that dried and it actually didn't. Hmm. Many people on Tesla forums/groups get accused of washing their car with something wrong to cause the issue, but my car looked this way from the moment of taking possession brand new, clearly not related to washing.

Not my car, pics lifted off the internet, but my trim looked identical.


Found a post on the subject that said to wipe the trim down with WD-40 in a rag and it would remove the rainbow causing residue. A couple days later and the fix looks to hold.

 

Yes! Got the 2022.36.6 car software update before installing the new aero wheels. This update includes a far more advanced and comprehensive energy app, including the ability to specify how much energy is spent on driving vs other vehicle functions.



For versioning convention, Tesla versions their updates as year, week number, and minor revision. So 2022.36.6, means released in week 36 of 2022 and is the 6th minor update of this release.

Always read the release notes to understand the updates. The car makes it so easy.

 

I'm guessing keeping the battery at optimal temperature when parked falls under Battery Conditioning. What type of battery usage would fall under Elevation?

 

I'm guessing it tells you how much elevation changes along driven routes have positively or negatively impacted range? Just guessing here.
