I remember my Granddads and my Uncles from that generation- those were some tough old birds! They would find a way to get anything done, no one was going to stand in their way. I like to think that some of my stubbornness/ hard headed-ness came from that gene pool.

Yeah, some pictures would help determine a proper repair.

Being it's a metal door, do you know anyone with a welder?

I was thinking one of these if I'm understanding your situation right.
They come in different sizes. Helps cover up wonky holes and also helps to keep the door from getting scratched by keychainss.

    Does not apply.
It's a standard wood cored, garage entry door.

I'll get pictures when I go to see Nora.

I don't have any pictures of the repair, but last year I fixed Dad's Garage entry door. It is a typical exterior metal/wood core door. All of the wood, about two inches above and four inches below the latch, was rotten all the way to the hole for the handle and would not latch closed. I chipped out all the rotten wood and installed several 3.5" wood screws about 2" deep in good wood to provide anchors and completely filled the space with about 8 oz of exterior wood putty. Once it hardened and painted, that fix has held up for over a year now.

That's not the issue. The latch goes into the door too far because the hole for the latch is too large in diameter.

Then the thing that weesa posted should put it in the proper location. Or get some filler and fill the location that is too deep. Or I'm not understanding what hole is too big

Without a picture of the door itself I’m having a hard time with it myself
