Their website says take it to a Volkswagen dealer, motor is similar to Volkswagen diesels.

I read that yesterday too…..but I’m only 45 mins away from DT. Seems like it would make better sense. I’m sure it would cut down on diagnosis time. I would love to have Todd’s genius mechanic brain right about now. At this point I would pay just to talk to him about this build. Sent an email to them couple of days ago…awaiting response.

I wonder how it communicates. OBD2 seems like a US EPA thing.
VW is just one of many with small diesels. 3L V6, I4's in Jetta/Golf, etc.
Benz as well such as I6 CDI's, V6 BlueTec, etc.

Interesting, looks like going forward they're looking at changing the swap to GM 3L
which may come in Ram, Gladiator, Wrangler - not sure what GMC/Chevy Colorado/Bison uses

might be an easier swap if those vehicles end up totaled. Parts available stateside, communicated on OBD2, etc. but would come with newer crap like adblue

I had a '98 VW with a 1.9 TDI. When it ran it was the greatest thing in the world. 90hp and I could go up the Grapevine without downshifting with the cruise set, 40+ mpg no matter how or where I drove it. When it broke nobody around here knew how to fix it and charged you out the ass to try and fail.

It has an OBD2 port but the computer wouldn't connect to the vehicle. One of the DT youtube videos clearly shows a scanner connecting to a 4runner for diagnostics and even a laptop cable.

the fact they said take it to a VW dealer suggests the D4D is either a rebadged VW 1.9L TDI ALH, or copy of it.

Seems like something that would be cheaper to swap in than paying $20k.
Not hard to find that engine in a junkyard stateside for less than a few grand

there's a thread on TDIclub of a guy swapping BHW into his 2nd gen (probably later TDI that replaced ALH)

    https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php?threads/2nd-gen-tacoma-bhw-swap.516662/

+ ALH has turbo, not sure if D4D does

    more power is Audi/VW/Porsche 3L V6 TDI
cars have reached their expiration date. Fix leaking upper oil pan is $10k+. Only reason people keep them is because warranty extension pays for that.
When the extension eventually runs out, they will sell the cars even cheaper.
But many or all have adblue

Found out from DieselToys that this truck needs at least one new injector and wire harness repair based on when the previous owner took it in last year.
Towing it in to them this morning to start diagnosis and repair. So grateful Todd worked to fit me in!!

Got really busy with life and purchased a new house that needed a full renovation.
This tacoma was thrown on the back burner for a while.

I am proud to say I drove 45 mins home for the first time today with zero issues.
Diesel Toys got it hooked back up!

Reliability was a big concern and still is so I really hope it proves itself.
Wiring harness, injectors, high pressure fuel pump, etc

I'm curious if the previous owner thought they could do their own work and got it in that mess.

Diesel Toys had information from the previous owner and the known issues. Its likely that he didn't have the cash to fix it and dumped it at the dealership.
Either way its done now... Wasn't cheap but I got a good deal on the truck.

I will say that the work that was completed at DT looks professional.
Let's see how it holds up.

an OP with an epic story.... THAT CAME BACK TO TELL THE ENDING!!!! This is a miracle!

26k for a DT swaped D4D tacoma stateside is a FUGGIN COME UP. That is a neat rig OP. Im sure once the random issues have been sorted the thing will serve you good for a LONG time.

30 day follow up...I have now put over 2,000 miles on this rig.
Averaging about 26 mpg with 32" tires, lift, and front bumper. Lowest I have seen is 24 mpg
Working on sourcing 1KD-FTV spare parts from ebay (belts, hoses, alt, wtr pmp)

That's totally the MPG these trucks should have gotten from factory with the 1GR V6, given their size. Jealous!

That sounds pretty accurate. I averaged 25mpg in my 2L VW TDI swapped Tacoma on 35s with a 2” lift. My truck was tagged on post #49. I have put 49,000km on the diesel until I burned a hole in #3 piston from excessive engine load and exhaust gas temp. Now I’m swapping a 3L TDI into it for improved reliability.

@werleyr20 If you didn’t already know you should be able to order European Toyota parts at your local dealer. I ordered a clutch friction disc from a 2019 2.8 D4D Hilux to install in my Tacoma from my local dealer in Ontario, Canada. That dealer couldn’t lookup the part diagrams but as long as I gave them the part numbers as referenced online. They were able to order them. It did take 2 weeks to receive it but at least they were able to order it.

    Beautiful work and truck!! @Braddman

I wish I was more mechanically inclined but swaps are way out of my league. I have noticed that lots of D4D parts can be ordered through the Toyota dealership or can be had stateside. Even found a cross referenced serpentine belt with Prime shipping

    10,000 mile update!
Zero issues and I love the truck.
Lost 1mpg when I added the Fab Fours Premium front bumper.
Also added some creature comforts (Clazzio covers, Seat Heaters, Audio upgrade, OEM power sliding rear window)
