It's okay, I also made the chuck... I really don't miss being a machinist. Being paid $18/hr to produce over 10k an hr is stupid.

That's why I want my own lathe and mill at work. I freekin HATE spending $380/ea for a stainless steel blade collar when I know I can buy a 2ft bar for $325 (thats off the street price) and make 18 collars

Not the best way of looking at it. I build half million dollar products once a month, $8mil due in the next 6months on one account, yet I get paid scraps.

No, I think it's an appropriate way to look at it. The machines I used had been paid off for over 10 years some as much as 70 years and often required more of my skill to compensate for their poor upkeep. I worked alone most of the time. Someone else designed the parts, I owned my tools and consumables while spendy for some cutters were peanuts compared to finished parts pricing. I'm not saying I should have made the entire parts cost, shit even a 1/16th would have been awesome. Ultimately I make 50% more now and put out very little physical effort anymore. It's demoralizing making $15k inconel (you ever machined that shit, it ain't easy) bolts and whatnot and barely getting over the minimum wage in return, it's a skilled trade and I was paid better than competing shops were offering. I think you have to evaluate what you're worth to some degree. I left because I couldn't stand working for what I knew was an unfair wage, I didn't have another job lined out, but what I was being paid wasn't worth the effort of going to make it anymore. I asked for more money, they said no, so I wheeled the box out and into the truck. Sometimes spinning your wheels just digs you deeper, then you find yourself out of gas and still stuck. I just decided to stop and find a new way out of the mud.

Depends, it's an actively dying trade. Most places that aren't job shops have taken to CNC for everything in which case a CNC operator (kinda like the bastard meth addict cousin of a machinist) just pushes buttons and measure some things that aren't totally critical. They still keep a machinist on staff to setup new machine processes and check tolerances. Those guys prefer no union cause their jobs have no competition anyway and job shop guys don't really unionize anymore.

Sure but I don't think that the value of the product dictates the wages directly. You should be paid fairly for your skills, which it sounds like you resolved. The other end of the spectrum is you spin your wheels and dog in because that the best it's gonna get and the alternative isn't any better. At least then you may get more pto with time lol

It was equal parts me leaving for myself and to hurt their ability to produce. But I don't believe in grunting it out when I've hit a dead end. That's just defeatism with extra turmoil. PTO I can't afford to use is pointless anyway.

I'm thinking about leaving my Logan internship. Pays shit and I don't really get enough hours for it to make a difference anyway

I'm wrecked. After 10 years at this house I finally had to clean the kitchen waste line. Ordered me a $40 water jet line for my power washer and cleaned it myself. Hashtag pLumMeR

Seems like a lot of legwork, unless you're rebuilding them yourself there's not much margin.
