I had more screws or nail puncture in 3 years (about 32k miles) in those tires, then I have had combined in 30 years of driving,,, no exaggeration. Maybe coincidence? with so few outside of these tires and so many with, I doubt it. My buddy is dealer and tech and after about the 3rd or 4th puncture, even he was thinking it was no coincidence. After about puncture 5, I just punted those things in the scrap bin, wasn't worth my time anymore.

My Sport came with Toyo A30s and the spare was the same size but a Firestone Destination.

Your post made me go out to have a look-see at what kind of a spare my 2022 TRD Sport came with...

So yes, my Sport does come with a full-size spare, HOWEVER, the wheels on the ground are shod with Toyo Open Country A30 tires while the spare's steel wheel is wrapped with a Hankook Dynapro HT RH12 tire. This is the first time in my 50+ years of vehicle ownership where a full-sized spare tire was a different make and model than the tires on the ground; color me surprised!

Plug it, and keep rolling, if it cause issues later, just replace. But it if doesn’t cause any issues, you just saved yourself $300

The general rule is within an inch of the shoulder; it's hard to judge from your picture, but my gut tells me your nail is borderline, but you might well be able to get it plugged.

Should be fine to plug but a tire shop will confirm. I've had numerous tires plugged and never once had an issue afterwards.

Happened to me with less than 500 miles on it. Was a nasty screw and it really pissed me off. Got it plugged and it has been fine now up to 10k miles.

    Yep. Plug and go.

Looks to be a small nail. If so, for punctures like that, I load the plug unevenly so that when you pull the tool out only one side ends up sealing the puncture. That decreases the stress in the carcass.

Note that the rubber cement is both a lubricant and a sealant when plugging.

Well maybe they were feeding me a line of BS then. I just know that the 3 shops I found still open at 6:30pm on a Tuesday all told me the couldn't fit me in for 2-3 days. I said but it's just a tire plugging and they all told me they don't plug tires anymore due to liability issues. Has to be removed and patched from inside. Everyone I've ever talked to about plugging a tire said they've never had one fail. I drove another 15k miles on the plugged tire before tread was shot and tires replaced. No issues.

If you need to replace it, go to discount tire and buy one there, it will be cheaper than the dealership, not sure what size your tire is but if its the Good Year all terrain adventure that comes on the TRD OR, Discount Tire has that tire for $202. Your spare is the same tire, so you could also have them put it on your wheel and get a cheaper tire for a spare as well.

Yeah. Even going back a couple decades, shops would not do plugs anymore. But even on the motorcycle side, plugs are a common recommendation. Never had a failure and never took it any easier on tires afterward.

The only plugs that I have heard that fail are the goofy and pricy mushroom plugs. The sticky snakes are superior, IMHO.

They dont like nails that are close to the shoulder because of the rare possibility that the nail went in at a funky angle and ripped some of the interior sidewall. If it's not a 3" decking nail or it pulled relatively straight, I'd say you'd be fine with plugging it.

If your spare is the same tire, I'd switch the tires on the wheels, plug the punctured tire and use it as the spare. Check its air pressure every week or so for about a month to see if it holds.

If your spare is different, I'd just plug the punctured tire and keep an eye on it.

I believe it is a little bit more than that. Tread area gets lots of flex, but the side of the tire and sidewall do the yeoman's work. With hysteresis heating the carcass, mainly the sidewalls, plugging the sidewall area can cause tears and further damage due to the flaw in that area. Shops do get a bit too conservative in the outer ends of the tread though.
