driving home for lunch and saw a mazda on the side of the interstate with their flashers on. right behind them was a tray bike rack with 2 bikes still on it, but the rack wasn't connected to the car... not sure if they just positioned it that way, or if the bikes actually hit the ground. either way rough.

ill see if my dash cam has a good picture.

no one has had issues like this? im guessing they had an after market hitch installed that failed

When I was a junior racer me and three friends were driving to a race. When we arrived.... No bikes. We just had a shitty trunk rack and all four bikes, and the rack, came off.

Luckily someone else on the way to the race was able to pick them all up. Three of us could still race but we all had some pretty battered bikes.

    Most issues are self-inflicted.

ive seen people come in with bikes grinded down from partially falling off a rack. bike damage from leaving their bikes on their roof rack and driving into their garage. havent heard/seen of the rack coming off entirely though. those cheap trunk racks i could see popping off if you hit a bump and the straps aren't tightened all the way.

    thats rough though

This was just wreckless juniors doing wreckless junior shit. I'm sure the rack was probably $40, probably slapped on the trunk in a hungover haze at 6am, and that 1987 Taurus going much too fast with the stereo playing Pearl Jam much too loud.

It’s a known thing, but why is it that PB basically never has an Evil bike in their field tests? They’ve got a Following in the recently announced Downcountry bike test. Comment section cut straight to it. I just don’t know the backstory on why they historically haven’t.

Never rode hydras, but I've broken a Stan's hub axle in half. No idea how that is even possible, the break wasn't at a spot where there should be any force acting on the axle.

No idea. The freehub was just warrantied a month ago for the pawls having a ton of lateral play and causing a crazy creak. To my surprise I looked online and found a few other folks recently with the same exact issue as mine where the axle broke in half leaving the cassette to fall over. Going to call i9 today about it and see if I can send them in for a rebuild since it's time.

Maybe a coincidence of two failures in a month but it has me thinking about some Onyx, DT Swiss, or CK hubs. Will say the rim and spokes have been very strong on these though.

I saw something on Onyx with the brake locked, the guy was pushing on the pedal and there's play. Sort of like it engages, but then there's a little 'bounce' in the system. Sure, it's instant engagement, but you can't tell me that wouldn't sap power. That was a big turn off, for me, from the Onyx system.

I've had some thoughts on the Hydra's, I don't like that it requires the hub to flex to really engage. I'm sure it's fine, I know all materials on the bike flex during a ride anyways, that just never sat well with me. I ended up going with the 1/1 hubs on my current bike and very well may do it again on the new build. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the Hydra system, but I've been very happy with the 1/1 engagement and may just do that again.

Nice man! Love it. Especially love that you have a mix of riders, not just all-out shredders. Helps people feel like it's an approachable area. I think that's something a lot of people miss when making edits.
    One day I'll come out...

Jeebus, no. And WTH is that hub connected to?! Can't tell what that is.

I just got a set of 1-1s that shipped with a wheel set from WR1. Engagement seems good. The pedal-kickback with a drop-the-bike test seems reduced from the Hydras. I do really like the fast engagement from the Hydras, but really couldn't tell the difference between them and the P321s on the trail.

    Hydras - 690 @ .52*
    P321 - 216 @ 1.66*
    1-1 - 90 @ 4*
    Hope - 44 @ 8.4*
    DT - 36 @ 10*

It seems like they positioned the 1-1 right in the middle of fast engagements hubs and those on the lower end. I'm currently running all of these hubs (around 2-5K on all of them), and they have been bombproof. Still on original parts, no bearing replacements needed, no seals replaced. I just got the 1-1s though, no miles on those yet. Definitely curious to see how these middle-of-the-road engagement hubs feel.

The cassette is a newish E13 Helix R. Yup I love the engagement but I could settle for 3-6°. Very curious about the kickback too. DT's ratchet upgrade gives you 54pts of engagement so ~6.6°

Coincidently, the only axle I've seen break somewhat recently has been on a 1/1 hub.

I trust my Hydras. I've had them since 2018? and they are on their third bike.

I have DT's on the Chameleon, and im sticking with the 36t ratchets for now. The 54t would be cool but there seems to be reliability issues on the higher engagement ratchets.

Edit: If I were to branch out from i9 it would be for a set of Onyx.
