I know I have hard water. I’m on a well with a water softener system. I’ve had a few pumps over the years but never seen anything like that. It still works but I don’t know what the inside looks like. Can’t trust it. I’ve had my basement flood before.

Rahl for what it's worth this is the best advice i've gotten on the forum. All of my corners are done now because of building it on the ground and making it work!

But, I can't take complete credit. Watching Tom Silva for many years has taught me that jigs and planning your next move make for better builds.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    I don't think it's a 45. Look more like a 52/38

Alright, I'm having issues with a contractor for a number of small projects at my house. Long story short, we might be making a trip to the magistrate's office to get this straightened out. Anyways, he installed an exterior door and storm door at the back of my house as one of his tasks, but he left it like this and hasn't been back since. I'm a total vinyl siding NOOB, what is the best way to finish this myself? I'm already finishing the interior stuff he never finished, may as well ad this to my list...

Run J channel around the door, but that wood under the door probably should have been replaced when the door was installed. If its not rotten maybe some metal flashing or paint, but the wood doesn't look in great shape from the picture.

IMO the J channel and the board replacement should have been done by the contractor during the install.

It was in the contract i signed, amongst other things. And this contract was signed last September as well. The wood actually isnt terrible, i mean the front is really beat up but its solid.

Does the siding then connect to the channel on the sides? Looking at pictures, i can see how the top would work, not 100% sure on how the sides would work.

If you google J channel there are a bunch of instructional videos of how to install it. Hope this helps. Normally the J channel is installed and then the siding after but you probably should be able to get it on without removing all the siding.

I installed a cable railing on the deck last weekend. It was tedious to install but the end result was worth it.

The J just hides the cut end and edges of the siding and allows for expansion and contraction of the siding material

Edit ~ there should also be some sort of drip edge flashing over the door directing water out and over the brick mould

Like others have said j-channel will be the solution
Problem is you will have to take a bunch of siding off to do it right smh. Wait for a warm ish day or you’ll end up breaking a lot of vinyl lol might want to brush up on vinyl siding install technique

I wouldn’t hire this person again

It really does, and the pictures don't do it justice. Even the sightlines from inside the house are much improved now.

we installed cable rail on a client build 2 projects back as it was just deemed legal in BC in our last code revision , such a nice look . Trying to convince current clients to use it instead of glass

Absolutely not. This guy has made this whole thing a nightmare. I really just want him to get the stuff done in his contract so I never have to see or talk to him again. But so far, he has done 25% of the work with 50% down in the contract, and I havent seen or talked to him again lol.
