Tread Wear Rate on OEM Toyo A30s

The pavement can be a big factor as well. My tires deteriorating in the 25k range are exposed half the year to not only Florida sun but also pavement that can be 140 degree plus in full sunshine and 95 degree weather. That’s a big difference in conditions for someone using them in the north somewhere that never sees 90 degrees and near as much sun.

 

LOL, I don't believe there is such a thing as "...north somewhere that never sees 90 degrees...", at least not in the continental 48. True the number of days were we saw temperatures over 90°F here in New Hampshire this summer wasn't much more than three or four dozen, but that number is growing every year.

 

I found the A30 to hydroplane really bad, happy to get rid of them at 30k..

 

I got 90k on my first set of Michelin LTX A/T2's and they had 8/32'nds left at 5.5 years when I pulled them off.

 

My A30's had more tread than that and wet traction was terrible. These tires honestly terrified me, and I've had had some shitty tires in the past. Put on Cooper AT3's last winter and I wish I would have had them from day 1. I would not wish A30's on my enemy.

 

Hell yeah. For the last stretch, I drove very conservatively in the rain, esp when near others. They honestly reminded my of my last set of Pirelli Angel GTs that were on my bike. Super sketch on tar snakes and paint lines, just like the Toyos. I didn't realize it until after mounting up some Michelin Pilot Road 4s that that those PoSs were slipping in corners on bare, wet pavement also. It was the final nail in the coffin for me with fucking Pirelli. Had struggles with a couple different type of their car tires also.

 

My final straw was last winter I parked in the alley beside my uncle's fence. I came to a stop and then the truck started sliding on the ice and bumped into his fence damaging the 3M on the corner of my bumper. I went to Canadian Tire and picked up tires that evening lol.

 

Wow, all of these A30 horror stories; I may reevaluate my thinking on keeping them on my Tacoma for a year.

 

Whoa. The Toyos were oddly good in the snow, but I ditched them at the end of the good weather in 2019. The Wildpeaks were way better is in the snow, almost boring. Hahaha!


I'm looking forward to how the Nokians do in their natural habitat. They seem close enough to how I remember the WPs when they were new to not detect much difference other than my earlier straight line accelerating comment. The Nokians seem to struggle to hook up.

 

I had mine for 5 years - 48k and they still had a bit of life to them. Just waited for them to wear out but 5 years was long enough and found a steal of a deal on my replacements

 

Mine were not terrible in fresh snow but as soon as it was packed or icy, watch out. I think Wildpeaks will be my next tire when I go to 285's.

 

That is just about any tire though, other than dedicated winters that have way softer compounds and granules embedded.

There, I enjoyed Blizzaks on our one car, mounted on a second set of wheels. But still, FWD was pretty limiting. Our whole fam is done there. RWD, AWD, or 4WD going forward.

 

Interesting, I grew up in Michigan and now live in New Hampshire; I cut my teeth on heavy RWD sleds and bias ply tires like my mom's 1969 Plymouth Sport Suburban station wagon. I then graduated to FWD cars with a few RWDs thrown in for good measure, and have never once felt the need for AWD or 4WD; the only reason my Tacoma is 4WD is this is the only configuration available with a manual transmission.

 

Had one day above 90 here in northern Wisconsin from a quick search, and maybe a dozen days that got close, above 85 degrees or so. Not that unrealistic.

 

With ice I've never seen any difference in tire performance, if its icy they slide unless its a studded tire of course.

 

I honestly think its the truck that was "oddly good in the snow" not the tires, but I definitely though it did well with the stock toyos as well.

I do credit the Taco as being a very confident beast in bad weather and on the trail. I do like taking corners, but the only time I didn't have confidence with it was when new and there was no weight in the back while slinging it around cold, wet roads. I used tube sand the first couple years, but now with the bed mat, Softopper, and about 100lb of stuff in a storage box, it feels as planted as with the sand.

 

Tell that to my old 530i (with Sport Package); with the OEM tires I couldn't make it up my driveway with a quarter inch of snow. One of my neighbors had a 5er as well and lent me his OEM wheels with all season tires to try out; the car was driveable with all seasons for most winter weather, however, things could get sketchy quick. I ended up buying a set of wheels with Michelin X-Ice tires mounted and suddenly the car became a winter warrior; regardless of the weather, I could reel in and keep up with even the fastest moving SUVs and such, errr, that is up to the point where the front air dam started acting as a snow plow.

One winter we had a really nasty ice storm, it was so bad I needed to go outside every few hours with a long PVC pipe and knock the ice off of our decorative trees as then were seriously drooping. Even with glare ice on the roads, the BMW had no problem negotiating my driveway (an 8% grade by the way), and getting me to and from the office.
