I took my Taco to the dealer for an oil change and a rattling underneath. They told me my rear heat shield was missing and my front one was loose causing the rattle so they took it off. Parts a labor for two new ones $700.00. They have to order the two heat shields. Seems a little outrageous to me. What do you all think?

All depends on if you want to tackle it yourself or find a quote elsewhere. Can’t imagine the heat shields are that pricey. Assuming the bolts rusted off inside as they usually do.

edit: replacement heat shields look like they’re $40-$60 a piece. So $700 is very high for what seems to be a simple task for most.

    I also think that’s outrageous.

I’d ask for the one they took off back
Use a big stainless hose clap and put it back on.

    This isn’t an uncommon problem.

I toss them all the time. Hose clamps work, but are not ideal, not really a professional fix.

Everyone is different, but really once they are rusted and loose there's not much you can do.

TNShooters looks better than the ones I toss. Most are rusted to hell.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Just as I thought $700 is outrageous. I have a buddy that is a mechanic and Taco owner. He told me to ditch them. At the very least I’ll buy them from the dealer. If the price is too high forget it.

The price likely includes labor to deal with the rusty broken off bolts. The front converter is probably harder to access.

If they quoting say 3 hours labor, at 180$ per hour that's 540$ right there

True but with the lift that's easier than in the driveway like when mine broke.

I had to bring it for something else anyway and just had it removed by Toyota.

It's not the service writer's job to decide for you if it's "too expensive" or not. His job to give you a price that reflects the amount of work involved.. so you can decide for yourself

Dealers do have high expenses. Buying and maintaining the latest equipment and training, insurance, property taxes, utilities, salaries, advertising, etc etc etc.
Nothing is free in life. You take your vehicle in somewhere for repairs, you gotta pay what they are asking.
Hence, I do what l can myself and save the hard stuff for soneone else. I may not like paying what they are quoting. But, that's my decision.

Same thing happened to me recently. Rattle was making me nuts. It would only rattle at 1100 rpm. Once I figured out it was the front shield, I drilled out the rusted bolt and put a new one in.

If drilling wasnt an option, I'd throw a hose clamp on it like the posting above.

The service writer didn’t decide or give me his opinion. He just told me how much the cost was.I thought, “GD that’s expensive lol”
