I can't imagine taking that apart and not damaging anything. Either buy yourself a brand new manual hub assembly, or a used manual hub assembly and use the cover and dial from the used set.

Are the gaskets needed? Could RTV work as a substitute? I'm rebooting my CVs and I just found out about the gasket in the housing. I don't have the time to wait for new ones.

    They're 'paper' almost.

I wouldn't use RTV, and I wouldn't doing it any other way than the right way considering it's super cheap and super easy.

Time is something I don't have and I can't wait on parts. Hopefully the old gaskets are in good shape.

OOOOOH MY GOD MAN??? THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I've been wondering WTHell was that drilled threaded hole was for??? I just did a replacement of my CV axles this July 4th weekend due to torn boots. When I removed the manual locking hub selector, there was nothing there (i.e. no bolt of any kind in the drilled threaded hole). I didn't think anything of it. You could clearly see down that part of the axle shaft it goes down about 3in in depth maybe and just ends. So, in other words, there is no "hole" all the way through the shaft and it just didn't make sense to me on why there was a threaded hole in the first place? Since mine were missing on both sides, I just took it as a manufacturing process hole of some kind that wasn't necessary in the end and literally only for maybe some sort of manufacturing process, that makes any sense?

Anyways, I got my CV axles from NAPA in hopes of rebuilding my OEM axles if the joints are not ruined since the boots were torn and it is unknown how long they have been torn. My NAPA CV axles came with a bolt, but no washer like in your picture. I was wondering what that bolt was for and now I know thanks to you!!!

What made it hard for me to do research was how to "word the search"?

I just happen to FINALLY come across this thread because I do need to replace the star gasket as mine is torn on the driver side due to simple wear and tear. So looking to order a manual locking hub gasket kit for both the left and right manual locking hubs on the truck.

    Here are my old axles...

    This is driver...

I also replaced my CV axle oil seals and replaced my lower ball joints on both sides.

I bought ProForged lower ball joints and they seem pretty solid so far.

Annnnyways, thank you for explaining what that threaded hole is for. I want to buy that "kit" you show in the picture just to install it.

Thanks to the OP for this thread.
