New tacoma with 6MT... how long did you have to wait?

I want to get a new tacoma (first for me), but the ones with 6MT gearbox appear to be pretty rare on top of general shortage. I put deposits down and submitted requests at 2 dealers, but everybody seem to be giving me a different time frame (some told me I could be waiting for 8-12 months). And that is for a request with 6MT with any color or options. Those of you who got a Tacoma with 6MT recently..how long was your wait?

I waited about six weeks. - But I ended up lucking out on the truck I wanted by chance and not supplied by the dealers where I had placed a deposit.

I never saw a manual on any dealership before I got mine.

I found mine out of state and made a trip out of it...

I would say put down a few deposits but keep your ear to the ground. As they say; it is better to be lucky…

Toyota does allocations on a regional basis. On the west coast, they rarely show up, and local stealerships didn't even want to try. After watching inventories w/in a 500 mile radius of me for a long time, I got a bead on who typically got one. When the time came to buy and once I saw some pop up on the radar, I drove 500 miles one way to get mine. I wanted a very specific configuration, color, and packages, so I took however long necessary to get what I wanted.

Don't know where you are, but I've noticed that the northeast gets them. Out west, Dolan Toyota in Reno, the dealership in St. George, UT, and several dealerships in NM seem to get them.

On TW, you can go to this link to get a fairly real time inventory. This link on TW decodes the dealer IDs so you can see where they are. If you see one, you can then go to that dealership's website to see if it's actually on site.

I waited a full year to get a manual tranny, Access cab, Sport 4X4, that was the wrong color, and had about 6K in additional options. I really like the truck, but there is not much “feel good” involved in a new Tacoma purchase.

Started finding them fairly quickly but they got scooped up, in the end it took me about 2 months to get an allocation. And then I had I had to drive pretty far for that.

About 4 weeks. Contacted my local dealer about one they had coming in, but it just sold. But they had another coming in that wasn't listed yet, so I put a deposit down.

In San Francisco, apparently, nobody wants to drive a manual anymore. Mine was on the lot for 11 months before I got a hold of it. Although this is before COVID and the current situation so any truck may be difficult to get a hold of nowadays without a markup.

Best thing to do is to be willing to buy one out of state once you locate one. Be ready to travel or pay to have it shipped. I located my 22 Pro 6spd in New Mexico. I called to find out its availability, made a deal and negotiated the shipping as well. Everything went pretty slim line.

I have a black 2021 DCSB TRD OR 6mt with 25k miles in SC.
It will be for sale as soon as my new tacoma arrives. That should be in the next few weeks.
I'll post it in the 3rd gen for sale forums as soon as the new one shows up.

    Nothing... yet...
Ordered a TRD Sport Premium on January 14th, 2022, after spending 2 months calling around and waiting at a dozen dealers all over southwestern Ontario. Mostly got calls offering me automatics or used 6MT's which I have no interest in. Was told to take work off on May 6th to pick up my truck so I did. Got there and seen the truck dropping off a bunch of cars and SUV's but no Tacoma's. Was told to hold tight, got the same call at the start of September that the truck would be there soon. Again, it didn't show up. Ended up canceling the order a few weeks ago and got my full payment back. Then to my surprise they just called me and said they just got the memo for their TRD Pro allocation for 2023 and right away called me and said its mine if I want it, in any colour or drivetrain and its supposedly set to arrive before the end of the year.

So, fingers crossed not getting my 2022 TRD Sport 6MT might end up being a blessing because TRD Pro's are impossible to get around here.

Put a deposit down on my ‘22 on 7/15/22, and took delivery on 10/4/22. TRD-OR 6MT. Ironically, the only thing I really didn’t like about the truck was the OEM gearshift knob. Damned thing looks like it’s split in half and feels funny. That was easy enough to fix with an old school “cue ball” TRD 6MT knob off of Amazon.

Look into a short shifter….hurst core shifter or the b&m model. The stock 3rd gen and 2nd gen manuals are like rowing a boat with the long ass throws. A short shifter is such a nice upgrade.

It’s hard to say … since you can’t order one I just kept checking the 20 local dealers until they came in. They usually come in batches. So just about 3 months for me …

They used to make them at the end of the month. But now maybe it’s different after the production moved.

I’ll do that, thanks for the recommendation!

I grew up driving manual Ford trucks from the 70’s & 80’s…now THOSE were like rowing the boat! Lol! I swear, it was almost a full arm span to get from 1st to 4th or reverse!
