This is my current client resurrection , the dock guys are just finishing up their part with cable rail on the wharf approach landing , we're still going backwards on the house itself

I ended up using the Muzata invisible cable railing swage lag screws. It was a cheaper option but you have to take your time on the install. You have to make sure the holes are cleared enough for the Lags to go in without much resistance. If you start screwing them in and there is too much resistance you will strip the lag making it impossible to install. They are soft metal that can strip easily, and the tool used to screw them in will bend open over time. When the tool bends you have to cut off a small chunk of the tool to make it usable again. If you don't mind spending more on the hardware I think there may be better options like Cable Bullet or going with hardware that is more of a turnbuckle style that goes all the way through your post.

I bought a hydraulic crimper from Harbor Freight and it worked well. The cable cutter that came with the stainless cable worked well too.

 

Man I love old houses. Replacing the exterior door and trim on this old house (1800's). Peeked inside and noticed the old floors. King Pine.

 

Ok so I am getting carpet installed tomorrow and just now realized I think I made a mistake by putting baseboards in and not leaving a gap under them. Yes I know im an idiot... Does carpet HAVE to have a gap under the baseboards?

I am thinking if need be I can just use a 1/2" piece of wood and score all the baseboards and chisel out a gap if need be. Would be open to other ideas of cutting a gap if there would be any cleaner solution. Pulling baseboards and trimming would be a nightmare because alot of them are built into wainscoating.

I've seen it both ways. You should be fine if you've hired out a reputable installer.

Baseboards should be about 1/2" off the subfloor for carpet to tuck

 

We just got the carpet through HD so no clue who the installer is. I realize now that I SHOULD have left a gap for carpet, I guess im just trying to figure out if it is a must, and if so how to go about cutting a gap without ripping out all of the base.

 

My baseboards are right to the floor. When we had new carpet installed they went right up to it. You should be fine

 

Same at my house. In one bedroom all the base was redone after the carpet was installed, because the old hot water heater flooded in from the adjacent garage wall side. The other bedrooms the carpet was tucked under the existing base. You should be fine.

 

Grab yourself an oscillating multi-tool and craft yourself a half inch spacer block to rest the blade on and go around the floor making your cuts. You'll find yourself using the multitool for more jobs than you would think.

I actually have a multitool and do use it a ton!

Plan for now is just to leave it as is and hope they are ok with it. Its just a bedroom downstairs so not a huge area.

 

Some years ago I hired a kid to put some tiles down for me, he had a multi tool, I had never seen one.
Instantly I knew I "needed" to have one.

They are kind of like a Dremel, you might not use it as often as a 9/16" wrench but when you do use it there is nothing better.

Man, had to mix more up as I ran out quick. Broke the wall up in thirds -



After the first part, I learned quickly to use a bit more compound and let the weight of the brush be "enough" when laying it down.

All done for today -



Though it may not look like it, a lot of the texture is gone and the wall is much more even than before.

Second coat tomorrow should be enough -
