no details specifically on which filter was used, later on there's some confirmation from other owners that aa130, and aa170 filters were used in different production runs...

Right, customer fucked himself by showing a receipt for the wrong oil and filter. They have no real way of telling

That’s a bold claim on behalf of the dealer since viscosity is a range and several oils are okay unless you’re operating in extreme temperatures.

Well if the car calls for 0w20 and threw in 15w50 it’s an issue we also don’t really know since it isn’t mentioned…. Only that it is wrong.

I ran delo 15w40 in my first gen for over 100k with no issues. Also have had delo in my 3rd gen runner for over 20k and still no issues. Not sure why people stress over oil so much

the whole thing is really odd. it's like they're reaching to not cover it
the ecu was just cracked this week, only open to beta testers and pre-orders right now, it was fundamentally impossible to disable the rev limiter up until this week.

the 5th gear 129mph note is also a really odd thing to state against the warranty, especially on a performance car that toyota's been on record stating that they won't outright void warranty coverage for using the vehicle in track events... there's numerous tracks where 129mph on the back stretch is just keeping pace with the back of the pack...

anyways, my point was not to sidetrack the thread so much as just provide some proof of someone that not only had engine trouble, but also had their warranty coverage denied specifically due in part to the wrong oil weight and filter.

An automotive engineer would give you a range of acceptable weight oils for temperature ranges.

good for you. This isn’t an accreditation pissing contest.

The point being made is that if the customer showed a receipt for an oil that’s outside of the Toyota spec, a voided warranty is the fair result.

And I’m saying how the hell can they claim that weight oil would cause the engine to fail?

If they want to deny a warranty claim they need to go with a better excuse.

No they don’t. It’s a very easy way out for them. Sucks for the customer especially say if there is no real difference but rules are rules if the manual calls for a particular oil then it is what it is…

also they clearly stated the car was revved to 8200rpm and threw a piston. So I’m sure the oil wasn’t even the main reason for the warranty denial.

    Exactly.

    So 5-20 won’t hurt the OP’s engine.

I don’t disagree. But I think the discussion shifted to whether or not a manufacturer can deny a claim based on non conforming oil spec. Bmw used to void warranties on the entire brake system when people updated the fluid to a higher boiling point DOT 5 or what not … wild

That’s not how the M-M act works…essentially, you can modify the vehicle or depart from manufacturer specs or maintenance requirements all you want, BUT if there is a failure within the warranty period, and the manufacturer can show it was caused by your mod or departure from specs, the manufacturer is permitted to void a warranty claim for that failure. That’s a big exception. And then…it’s complicated….as other threads on TW have stated, fighting an auto manufacturer in court by citing the M-M act is a great way to spend far more in attorney’s fees than the repair would cost out of pocket. And probably lose unless you have really deep pockets.

As with all TW oil threads.....you can feel the slow turn southward.

No, my 2019 U.S. manual states, if 0w20 is not available, you may use 5w20 but, it MUST changed back to the 0w20 the very next oil change. but, they talk about the oil being more fuel mileage economical. direct from the manual. this is what Toyota recommends, unless there is an updated bulletin for U.S. spec'd engines, to use other weights. This is after the fact, for the incident you are speaking of.

This is directly from Toyota in regard to their SEMA Daily Drift build.

Vehicles specially modified for racing with non-Genuine Toyota parts may void the vehicle’s warranty, may negatively impact vehicle performance and safety, and may not be street legal.

Difference between an engineer and a lawyer.

We can all agree oil for the most part is oil, but there comes a point where someone must draw a line that Toyota can't take responsibility anymore.

Unfortunately, Toyota has decided that line is at 0-20 only.
