So I bought my '98 4x4 SR5 V6 5spd Tacoma last weekend and I have had nothing but shifting problems since!

Here is my post in the Won't Shift When Cold Thread. I thought I had it taken care of.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-tacomas/121754-cold-wont-shift-2.html

1st I thought the transmission fluid was just dirty and/or the incorrect fluid.
    =Changed it to Redline MT90

2nd I thought it was the clutch master cylinder brake fluid which was almost black.
=Changed it at the same time as the trans fluid. Flushed it from reservoir to the bleeder screw down on the "clutch release cylinder" (Haynes manual calls it) -aka- Slave Cylinder *that mounts on the drivers side of the transmission, and topped it off with new DOT3 brake fluid after bleeding the system.
***The next day on the test drive it shifted into every gear perfectly!
***The next morning after temps in the 20's it wouldn't go into gear until the engine was hot.

3rd I thought, based on what I had read here that it was shifting very rough because of the cold temps.
=I warm up the truck for 5 to 10 minutes! Getting it hot & at operating temp.
***This worked up until the 2nd day.

I am pissed! What needs to be replaced or done so I can have smooth normal shifting. When I test drove it the truck had just been driven on the highway for 4 hours. When I shifted it didn't have a trace of tough shifting. Now I can't even muscle it into gear, or it grinds BAD if I do, OR sometimes if the RPM's are around 3k it will let you shift (as long as the engine is hot). The clutch pedal is not stiff and has good pedal with a couple inches of travel.

How many miles are on the truck? If its old enough to have almost black fluids in the clutch the original owner probably didn't take care of the truck very well, maybe its time for a new clutch?

sub'd. having a similar problem, only with 2nd gear though. recently changed the clutch fluid and also changed the tranny fluid from royal purple to amsoil manual transmission and transaxle gearlube 75-90 GL4. helped but not enough,i may try amsoils severe gear fluid to see if that helps that is if i can find some.

Try double clutching for 2nd gear and see if that helps, its possible you might have a bad synchro

Ok I figured it out. Today I replaced the Clutch Master Cylinder and the Clutch Release Cylinder aka the Slave Cylinder.
My initial test drive was perfect. 5 hours later and 35deg my next test drive was good also. The clutch disengages very positively.

About 3 hours later and 35 deg I drove it again and it was good to go! I think these two parts were the issue all along but I am glad I put the Redline synthetic fluid in the trans and transfer cases. Everything feels really smooth.

You probably had bad internal seal on one or both letting the clutch fluid past the piston not creating enough pressure to disengage your clutch..

Correct on Autozone for the Master Cylinder because of lifetime warranty and Toyota wants about $140-$240 for it and it has to be ordered.

The Slave you should get from Toyota its only $60. These last 100k at least! Spend the extra.

These parts fixed my described problem at the top. My truck combined with the Redline MT90 made my truck shift like a dream.

But what you need to know is, get a big bottle of Dot3 brake fluid and bleed bleed bleed that clutch hydraulic system.

And do not forget to put the clutch pedal return spring back on! If you do you will end up thinking you have soft pedal after the truck sits overnight or gets real cold while sitting. Happened to me.

replaced them yesterday OP, the hardest parts was gettin the cotter pin back through the clevis that holds the master cylinders pushrod to the pedal, and also getting the line off the slave i ended up removing the wheel and reaching up over the frame.anyway got er all done and shifting is now much smoother:D.

    Old bump (hopeful for response)

Did that clevis just pull through the firewall? Or did you have to remove it?

I can't get it through the hole in the firewall.
