It’s not , I called to get a eta and they said they don’t get enough people asking for them to justify making them , the more that email/call the better chance of them making it . I made a thread asking for a blown third gen trans they can use to make it and nobody has one for a reasonable price

 

well i guess i got my hopes up for nothing LOL. maybe I will make a new post asking for people to add there names to the interest list see of that goes anywhere

Upgraded my oem ATF cooler today. Could not find a True Cool ATF cooler from a reliable vendor, so went with a cooler making many best-budget lists, a Hayden plate/fin, #679, $48 on Amazon. It had a manufacturing defect - the inlet/outlet nipples has a sharp edge where it pressed into the cooler tubes. It was easy to smooth down with a file; sandpaper would have worked also. Did a couple other mods as noted below. Best part - no leaks and ATF temps have gone down.

I re-used the oem driver-side bracket. In the oem cooler, ATF flows upwards through the cooler. I positioned the Hayden cooler sideways with the ATF coming in from the top. I don't know which flow direction is right, if any.


On passenger side, I added 30mm nylon spacers, two custom cut brackets and a rubber washer. Used oem bolt.


I had to reposition the horns higher up, about 1.25 inches, to clear the cooler. I drilled holes in the oem horn brackets.


In order to not purchase the small ATF hose ($25) from the radiator outlet to the metal line connector, I, cut to length, a hose from the radiator outlet to the Hayden inlet nipple. I also used my own 3/8” ATF line instead of Hayden’s smaller 11/32 hose.

My initial test drive was encouraging. On a long grade where I used to hit 200’s at the top of the hill, the ATF temp was in the 180’s - same ambient temps and same speed. On the way back, I would hit 210’s, now, 190’s. Real test will be in a few weeks when I tow a 21-foot RV trailer 70 miles to the desert, through a mountainous section.

 

You oriented the cooler correctly - hot on top, cool on the bottom.

 

Had the Tru-Cool 4454 installed by my local shop. I'm noticing quite a difference in temperature reading from my scangauge II. Maybe it was from the cooler 55 degree weather today but I used to run 130-150 around town and 145-165 on the highway. Now I'm seeing 110-125 around town and 140-159ish on the highway. Before the cooler, warm days I would see north of 185 at times on hills. Same hill I'm seeing 155-159.

Is this considered normal? I hope I'm not over cooling or doing damage.

I'm assuming they installed it correctly. Top hose from the radiator is going to the cooler then a hose going back to the transmission.

 

@Sonofliberty92 On my truck, the bottom port of the radiator ATF tank was the outlet, so I attached a new ATF hose there and routed that line directly to my new ATF cooler. I used an IR gun to confirm which ATF line was the outlet.

 

So I'm assuming they installed it wrong. ffs.

 

@Sonofliberty92 It seems they routed from ATF cooler to radiator when most, from what I’ve read, go from radiator to ATF cooler. But, your temps are lower than mine. So, either I routed wrong, or your cooler is more efficient. I vote the latter since mine was a budget cooler.

 

Someone else just confirmed on another thread the factory cooler is routed from the top port of the radiator to the cooler. So it seems they routed it correctly.

 

Anyone have a photo or can confirm what line from the rad goes to the cooler?

 

It’s the top line for sure , I just did rad swap last week

How much extra fluid are people putting in when putting in a new cooler? I just ordered a

Hayden 678 to install this week but I just realized I need or order more fluid also.

 

All depends on how much you lose when you go to pull the lines. Always check the fluid level afterwards. Add what's missing.

 

I don't plan on losing much I just got a trans flush last year at Toyota and I'm going to try and make quick work of the line switch. would 2 qt be enough if I don't loose much? just want to order enough so I can do it on tuesday

 

Should be plenty. I gave my mechanic 2 quarts when he did mine. Make sure it's Toyota WS fluid. And he said he did have to use it because it made a mess coming out. But whenever you're messing with the transmission lines, you need to check the fluid afterwards.

 

You talking in the trans itself right? I thought they were sealed with no way to check other then opening the fill valve.

 

Yes, and yes. There's no need for you to prime the cooler beforehand.

 

Sweet I was thinking I did need to. I know I need one. Just loaded with out normal camping load this summer in Wyoming I saw temps climb to the high 230s and we just bought a 4000lb GVW travel trailer so I NEED one now. In my fashion I ordered one and then found this forum so I am slowly making my way threw it trying to figure it all out. Thanks
